  4. For those who enjoy reading a good book about racing, I just got my copy of, Langhorne! No mans land. It's 548 pages of great text and great photos. It's big and heavy. Spencer Riggs does a great job on this book. It's pricey but I thought it was worth it before I started reading it. I'm on page 88 and I feel very good about spending that kind of money on it. It covers Langhorne from 1926 to 1971. It would be a definite addition to any racing history enthusiast's library.

Yep, 13 inch wheels have been the standard midget size for a long time now.

I am running 13" on mine, much easier to find usable tires for the 13". You can get older but still good tires from modern midget teams very cheap.

13's are standard.. But 12's are older.. The 13" midget Halabrands are pretty availible and don't bring much.. Maybe $100 a wheel.. Ebay may get more, but you need to check out COKER TIRE first.. If your going Cageless, She needs "ribbed fronts" and Skinny rears..

As for Skinny 12" Halabrands.. there harder to find.

Your Midget would be correct with either.. It's up to you. DO WHAT LOOKS GOOD TO YOU!

    Same here.. 20" wide.

The grilles are availible for $200... and cost about $100 bucks to polish..

As for an Aluminum grill.. Look up "Van Craft" in Indianapolis.

Is that the one driven by Richard Shoji. Polished aluminum with red #2. Shoji won the 1/4 midget nationals in Tulsa, Ok. in that car in 1959. I think he was running a Solt engine in the AA open class.

Welcome Steve.. I'm sure your question will be answered soon.

    -----------------------------

Above I mentioned VanCraft in Indy. For any of you who are not familiar with Van, Here is his info and a few pics. I'm sure Roy and the boys can tell more! ..as I understand it, Van has the original Jigs, or bucks.. or both for Kurtis Midgets.

One of you Indy guys jump in here and explain. Or, VAN jump in. I thought you or someone at your shop was on here a while back.

Van is a really nice guy. A few of my buddies have taken hoods and panels off of their Hot Rods up to his shop to Louver.. and Van usually says, "there's the machine, have at it kid" :D

Which is exactly what my guys want!

here is a couple pics of the right side templates i made (used posterboard). will transfer to aluminium with rolled edges like other side.
i just did it to kinda see what the completed profile will be. i think i'm going to leave the nose out a little further than it should be about 6 to 8" further. i just like the look (profile). i also mocked up the instrument panel and the panel underneath the instrument panel.

i'm sure i will get a lot of guys saying no don't do it. but here me out first!!
at this point i want to just get it as a roller: rearend, steering, in out box, engine, wheels & tires, suspension etc. so listen to this, i was out yesterday picking up a old truck i bought on this guys property (80 acres). way back in the back was a old engine that when i first saw it reminded me of a offy. i thought it looked pretty cool to put in my midget as a roller.

i think it will look pretty good with some side drafts and cool exhaust.
anyway i took some pictures of it!

turns out the engine is a FIAT. but hey it looks kinda like a offy or one of the old overhead cam engines. here is the front picture also.

need a midget quickchange rearend if anybody has one.

thanks to all the help i have got so far i really appreciate it.

Rob, don't worry about what anybody else thinks, build it the way you want it. It's your money, time and effort.
Are you near Phoenix? If so, there use to be a strong contingent of midget racers/builders around there. The first one that comes to mind is Rick Stewart. He built a lot of very successful midgets and open wheelers down there for a looong time and IIRC he had a shop not too far from Manzy speedway. I recall hearing he had some health problems a while back, so I'm not sure of his status, but he might be a good source for parts locally. Maybe try Googling 'Stewart Fabrication' (I think) and see If he has anything you need. Just a thought.

How about a Watson Snowmobile :D
My Hubby "Speedwagen" was bored one winter day, and he carved a Watson Roadster out of snow.

  26. Pretty cool Miss Patty. You got a "single" twin sister?

  27. The polished aluminum 1/4 midget Richard Shoji drove was built by Arlen Kurtis, and owned by Bob Baugh of Chicago. I doubt it ran a "Solt engine". Richard's dad, Carl, built engines for Bob. May have run a Solt head, but the engine was Carl's. I don't know about the cams for Red's VW engines, but when my dad and Carl were building 1/4 midget engines, they were having Kenny Harmon grind the cams. Carl Shoji was a genius with air cooled engines. That's why Red's VW's kicked ass when they first hit the track. Richard and I were good friends. We spent many summer evenings playing in the lemon grove around Carl's Upland, Ca. chicken ranch. Broke my heart when I heard Richard had been killed on his way to work in a head on collision with a drunk driver.

  28. Anybody know anything about this rearend? Looks like a steel/cast iron v8 style quickie
