Good pinups have to be drawn/painted. Look at all those old ones - they are stylized and idealized and (this is most important) the chicks all look clean and wholesome and innocent. You cannot get that by pointing a camera at some skanky porn "model." (A good photographer probably could do it by using regular models, but good luck finding sweet, innocent-looking girls with super-hot bodies without silicone and/or tattoos messing it all up!)
Somewhere along the line "pinup" became code for "skanky softcore porn."
