SKELLY - part of the sign logo must be worn or weathered off.
There were SKELLY truck stops scattered in various places.
I worked at one during high school days.

The local one is now a BP truck stop today. I do not know whether it was a company buyout or a locally owned affair.

My dad's paint and body shop in Irving Texas taken in the late fifties or early sixties.

Looks like an early form of dyno...the rear tires are resting on roller wheels!

Not a wrecker per se but there's probably not much it wouldn't pull out of
a ditch...

 

My maternal grandparent's place circa late '40s or early '50s.

That barn behind the station was converted for service and repair.

The barn and the station are long gone but the house still stands.

I have an old metal sign advertising AAA towing service hanging in my garage that I pulled from the rubble when the old station was knocked down.

 

I like the coupe conversion to a tow vehicle. Very cool.

That's what a lot of folks did back in the day.

Big old luxury cars were cheap and overbuilt.

The station was located in Delanson, NY.

 

I grew up in Livingston, NJ...I can't say I remember this truck but it sure is cool.

 

I'll be it made it to Macungie, Pa. truck shows.

Fenders don't match (and duh; neither do the wheels), but the grille shell, headlights & hood sides/doors match '30-31 Cadillac damned near exactly.

 

Maybe someone mentioned the Frank Lloyd Wright station in Cloquet?

 

I'm a huge fan of old gas stations, and have lots of books on them, but I really would love to get a quality repro print of this, its just too cool, and has great detail.

As for this, before there were wrecker companys making "wreckers" stations would buy old touring cars, the bigger the better because of the big frames, and motors to make ther own wrecker.

A lot of Cads, Packards, Lincolns, and such were modified just like this one.

 

I finally got a chance to stop and snap a couple pix of this old Ford wrecker in Triadelphia, WV

 

I was in the Saratoga NY Auto Museum admiring a 36/37 V16 Caddy Phaeton. The hood louvers and the cowl louvers sure look the same.
