You can obviously weld like hell too.Can I ask what welder you're using and what settings do you prefer for the frame?

I weld okay. It's a Miller 180. For the frame (which is .120 wall) I have it set at Voltage-4 Wire speed-4 a tad higher on the voltage in a T joint. I love my welder. I took a picture of it.

Hows it going??I´m building a -31 coupé with a -57 DeSoto 345" Hemi.What rear axle are you using??And what gearbox and clutch are you going to use??

Excellent post, Paul, and the build is fuggin' killer! Keep these updates coming cuz I wanna follow along.

 

Looks great. I much prefer seeing engineering build up pics than shiny finished cars.

One query about the hairpins, looks like you put a lot of weld around these inserts, but then ground it all off afterwards. I'm worrying there is not a lot left holding the inserts in place, which is basically the strength of the hairpin as so much is removed in the hole.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, I lost my shop and had to move buildings. We're about to get settled in here soon and there are some major changes to my build coming.

Vincent, My rear axle is '57 Ford and the gearbox I'm using is T5 with s10 tailhousing. clutch will be a 10" hayes.

 

Really inspiring build there. I have a '31 A as well. Going with a flatty in mine though. Ive got a few different engine, tranny, and rear end options here, but so far looks like a flatty with a T5, and possibly a 9" ford or a Dana 44 rear. no channel and probably no chop. Eventually I'll chop it but at this point I won't. A whole lot of personal stuff goin on in life at this point, and I am trying to finish clearing out my other projects witch half or more are not even mine to begin with. Hopefully We will be moving out of corpus and up towards SA or Austin within the next year to year and a half. Keep up the posts, and It is lookin Awesome...

Wow. Finally settled in a week ago and have started to make some progress. Here the new shop:





I lucked out and found a really good drivers quarter. So now what was the "good" quarter aint so great. Essentially, whomever had this before me tried to weld some patches on with a stick welder. Also, everything was lap-welded over the old metal, which they didn't clean of course.. Sigh. They also went ahead and beat the living shit out of the panel to bend it in to make room for the new panel. What a mess. I cut it all out.

YUCK!!





I had to spend hours just feathering the old welds in hope of saving as much as I could to build off of.





Now it's time to start thinking about patching. Where to start? You see I forgot to mention that this side was an inch or two shorter than the drivers side. They just didn't measure. I want it the same as the other side. WHAT DO I DO?!! Oh. DUH!

This gave me an EXACT method of re-construction. Just make it the same...



Patch fits like shit. It's too flat.





SHRINKERS RULE.





I don't know why but the metal doesn't photograph straight. It's smooth..



Now the Back part of the patch does not line up with the wheel well. Made a pie cut and brought it back a tad, stuck a sliver-o-metal in there and welded her up

 

Moving on to the rear corner.

Started welding at the bead. That's waht I cared about lining up most. The rest I can use the FORCE!



Guess what? Wheel well didn't line up. Pie cut baby...



I didn't want to try and fill that crazy cut so I cut it out square and filled it properly...



I forget to take a picture of the back side but as you can probably guess, it was just some dancin and weldin.





I've got to get goin on the wheelwell panel next but I'm on it. Later...
