Ok I didnt read after the first page but thank god it was a cop because you know the city has insurance and WILL pay you. The cop sounds like an asshole I will agree, he should have worried about you first and his ass second. I have been in accidents at work. I know I will get time off if its my fault and so what, our video shows the truth so I dont even worry about whos at fault just to make sure everyone is ok.

And to those who roll with the Fthe police aspect of life, Mac, YOU ONLY SAY THAT UNTIL A SERIOUS CRIME IS COMMITTED AGAINST YOU, then you beg for our help. and guess what WE ARE THERE FOR YOU, even though you have been the ass 99% of the time to us. We do our job, if you find yourself dealing with the police maybe your the one who needs to reconsider your actions.

I have nothing against any person no matter their job, so dont judge me on mine, judge me on my personality and my history with you. Not some asshole cop who threw the book at you because he had a chip on his shoulder.

Sorry to jack your thread but atleast it wasnt an illegal alien who has no license, insurance, or anything to pay you back and get your rod fixed.

LOL! I knew a cop would bubble to the surface after all of those comments, and one who calls himself Popo no less! LOL! But guys, you gotta hand it to him, he has a point. Just like you don't like being judged by your car and sick boi kit, he doesn't like being judged by his badge and blue suit. You don't like getting hassled by the man, he doesn't like having to wear bullet-resistant vests, this brings up instant pissy buttons, that when pressed causes drama instanter.

There are good rodders and there are good cops, don't let either get confused with their parallel universe evil twins until you get to know them.

Thanks, PoPo. You nailed it. Fred, I'm sorry to hear about this and even sorrier that the cop involved wasn't a standup guy and didn't check onyou and your well being FIRST, then lied about it. I can assure you, all of us police are not this way. Just to cover myself though, I think I would hire an attorney if I were you to read the details of any settlement. I hope to see your ride back better than ever soon. Oh, BTW, you "F- the- police" guys- remember some of us drive old tin too, and would give you anything we could to help a fellow rodder. Judging all Police by one bad apple is like us judging you because you have a tattoo, or because of the color of your skin. It's wrong and immature! Sorry 'bout the hijack, Rant over!

Get yourself a Lawyer, Its not to Sue them, but to protect what they owe you. You know that they will try and tell you your car is worth nothing.

You just need someone that can fight for you, knows the law and can get you what they owe you. everything that is an expense to you in this accident, (doctor, towing, storage, damages,) is owed to you.

Hmmm, actually, even if they had only a gun and just a bandana, they would be pretty tough IMHO.

I didn't read through all of the post. Glad to hear you are alright. someone may have already posted that you have to get permission to sue the city. They are self insured. I had a headon with a cop in my welding truck. Totally his fault. Witnesses saved me. Took a while to get reimbursed. My lawyer was a family memeber and wouldn't give up. Lawyer up. TP

First off, I'm doing fine. Still sore in my right knee, but time will tell. I don't think it will give me much trouble, but my doctor will be the judge of that.

A lot has been said about good cops and bad cops in this thread. True, the one I hit didn't care how I was until his fellow officers showed up and cared how I was. Then he seemed to ACT concerned. He even offered me a bottle of water, which I refused. He was and still is a jerk in my mind, so whatever. The other officers were great and honestly seemed to realize that my account of the accident was valid. All they had to do was look at the lights and read the yield sign and do the math. My story just added up.

I don't know what will happen to that cop and I really don't care. Maybe he'll have the unfortunate experience I did. Please don't judge all police officers by this guy or the few none caring ones that may be out there.

My total concentration is getting Miss Behavin' back on the street. It sucks that the weather here is going to be getting livable and I won't have my hot rod to enjoy it in, but she will be back. Perhaps better than ever. I mean, I was going to originally paint her black and now that the body will have to come off, this will be the time to do that.

I also know that a lot of people would think that this is a nice "lotto" oportunity. I'm really not into that, all I want is to get my medical bills taken care of (if any) and getting my hot rod back on the streets.

Thanks to EVERYONE who has posted. It really feels great to be a part of something where the people care about eachother and what happens to them, be it good or bad. I have read the advice given and a lot of it will help steer me to a good decision. I have contacted my insurance company and I have left a message for an attourney to call me. I'm sure once he hears that the incident involved a city vehicle, he'll be calling first thing Monday.

I have a good idea that dealing with the city is going to be a drawn out affair. My thoughts are also that my insurance may not pay until they get the city to pay them first. I really don't know how that works. All I want to do is get her fixed. As some of you know, I had some money difficlties dealing with my moms car situation and have a few new bills now. Bills that will just about kill my hot rod budget, but things will work out once I just sit down and get the thinking cap on.

Anyway, I still have you guys and I had a great summer cruising my ride. Probably the best summer a car guy could ever have or hope to have. There will be more, I'm too addicted to the fun to let something like this stop me.

Thanks again everyone. You guys, this site, and the T Bucket site I belong to are great. I'm getting ready to go to the Houston HAMB meetup today. Hey, misery just LOVEEEEEEES company and I've got enough to share.

I didnt read thru the entire thread but, first off do you have good agreed value insurance? If you do they should take care of most of this for you if you get an attorney and he takes a percentage of your settlement unless the settlement is more than enough to cover your repairs and med bills your gonna come up short I think I would try to get a statement from witness get all your info and documentation in order ASAP and see how it starts to play out before jumping on the gonna sue bandwagon. If they agree to settle on agreeable cost of your car and cover any med bills, lost wages etc... I'd be happy with that I can see how if pressured into a big money lawsuit this could turn ugly. Im not familair with your car but if they wanted to pick on legality and safety issues with it it might get ugly IMHO
sorry about your car and glad your OK

Sorry to hear about the accident. Reading your post, however, I've never heard of a controlled intersection which had a 2-way green light plus a green turn arrow. Sounds like a traffic engineering problem. In California, controlled intersections have a green turn arrow, only if opposing traffic light is red, to keep incidents like this from happening. Had I been traveling in your state, I would have made the same assumption.

Don't know if the cop was lying or was just plain unfamiliar with the intersection. I was at the scene of a traffic collision where the cop was deciding fault. I felt he was blaming the wrong party so I pulled him aside and explained the various laws governing this particular incident. Guess I was convincing because he changed the party at fault.

I am an x-cop, there is no excuse for their behavior, it is wrong from any angle!! They should done the right thing period. Go to the town attorney, if you want get an attorney. If you don't want money for youself get them to train their cops to be cops. If they did this to you, if something like 911 hit the would all run and hide. This type of incident shows a lot about what they are made of. They should all be retrained or dismissed. When you carry a weapon, the stakes are higher, so are the expectations. if they acted like that and you were hurt, would they delay treatment for you to cover their buddy's butt? Thank God we don't have to answer that.

    Loyalty Above All, Except Integrity.

    I am glad your ok!

  16. Fred- Glad youre O.K. how did the body hold up? Can it be re-used? Got straight frames and axles and rr rods here. Get well. Your pal, Mikey

This has happened to us also in our T-bucket several years ago. Like Russco stated above, your insurance should pay for your damages either under your Collision coverage or under your Uninsured Motorist coverage and then they will subrogate the City of Houston for the damages they paid to you under your policy. Keep good records of all expenses and doctors bills, towing etc. Hopefully your insurance company has someone that specializes in custom cars like State Farm does here in the Austin area. That would be me for State Farm. If you happen to have State Farm Insurance, PM me and I can let you know of some good people in your area. It really is better to let your insurance handle it because that is what you are paying them for. Good luck and glad to hear you are ok.

you should sue for the medical bills and talk to internal affairs about his behavior,no excuse for it. you may feel fine now,but I was hit in 1992, t boned, and i'm gradually having problems getting worse now from that incident. You don't have to act like it's the lottery, thats the problem nowadays, everyone thinks they are entitled to millions of dollars or something.
and lots of lawyers encourage this. The reason for lawsuits was to compensate you for damages and medical bills, things like that, If if's something some one did like in this situation, they are at fault and you should be paid for the damages. It's not like you spilled hot coffee in your lap and tried to blame someone other then yourself. You should sue for enough to go to a good orthopedic doctor and make sure that you don't have any problems that the usual poor examination at the emergency room misses. If they catch them now, they can probably be fixed before they get worse. You don't have any way of knowing if you may have something like a damaged disc in your back that doesn't show up for years. Only a good doctor can check for these things. what if something shows up later and you can't work? you don't have to sue for millions, just protect yourself and your family is all. this is why they maintain insurance. that was no fender bender, that was a serious hit. as far as the cop coming over and yelling at you,he should be fired for the way he acted. what if you were bleeding internally or something? and he ignored you and you had died?

LOL...I can hear the jingle "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there"

Fred, you have the best attitude a person could possibly have. You don't seem to harbor any major ill feelings towards anyone, you just want to be treated fairly and be compensated for your loss. The world would be so much better if everyone had your moral values and common sense.

And no, I don't hate all cops....just the one that tried to kill you.

That's funny. I'm the guy who posted the picture of the car. When we were driving up on it, and saw all the cop cars (before we saw the wrecked T-bucket), my 11 year old says "someone must have brought a box of doughnuts!"...

even if you don't want to sue you need a lawyer, the city will try and screw you anyway they can. I've heard of cities screwing people in hot rods before, claiming the car wasn't a production car and theerfor didn't have to be fixed. they will try to get you any way they can. I know you sound like a nice guy,but I can almost guarantee they aren't

good thing your ok, T against a cop car is serious stuff. I guess the cops take first things first, and it wasnt you! I experienced that type of action riding motorcycles, people look at you but it doesnt register in the brain or something. [ One of the most common cycle car accidents], people will just turn in front of you if its not what they are looking for I guess.I didnt realize that till I did the very same thing to a guy on a bike. was looking for a break in traffic, and when it was clear I shot out, well there was a biker coming right behind that car [with headlite on] and as i rethink it my mind was looking for a car with 2 headlites and my mind said 'GO'. I guess it may have been the same thing with your T. well he braked and I didnt hit him, I was shocked about it, but everything turned out ok , he gave me a wave.

I'm calling Bullshit on this one. I've never been fond of city cops, 'cause every single one of them I have ever met has been a dickhead on a power trip, just begging for a situation where they could taser or beat down someone. The Highway Patrol is a different story, they're about 50/50 asshole to decent guy (again, based upon my own experience with them).

My shop was broken into last year, and by a minor miracle of co-location, I happened to scare them off by stopping in (at 3am on a Sat) to pick up some ratchet straps before heading out to Chicago to pick up a piece of equipment.

They didn't get away with much, but that was just luck (or the flying fickle finger of fate, as my old man would say). The cops took nearly an hour to get there from six blocks away (in a town of 1,600 people). I had to leave, so I called and woke my old man up. He got up, got dressed, and drove 5 miles into town and still beat them there by half an hour.

They scattered fingerprint dust all over the place, found a single fingerprint (that belonged to me), and left the huge mess.

About a month later, we saw them at the diner and they called me over and asked if I'd ever found out who broke into my shop. I was like "WTF!?! I thought that was your job?", and they all just guffawed and slapped their knees. I haven't heard a single word from them since.

These kind of cops don't give a shit about stopping crime, or even catching criminals, let alone actually helping people. They're in it for the power, the chance to maybe shoot somebody and get a medal for it. Among their ranks are deadbeats (a great many), wife beaters, thieves, sadists, and general nut jobs . . . . and they're all in cahoots. When one goes a little too far and people notice, they close ranks and sweep it under the rug, give the public the silent treatment until folks forget.

If you few good cops want to be respected, hows about you clean your house and give us all a reason to respect cops again.

Respect doesn't come with the badge, it comes with the actions that should be and historically were performed while wearing the badge.

The reason folks have the "Fthe Police" outlook is because the actions they're seeing from cops is not the sort of thing that inspires respect.

    Fred,
    Just saw your post.
I was going to go to the Darkhorse today and was looking forward to seeing your T-Bucket again, I didn't make it, (again), and i know your bucket wasn't there after reading this thread.

Send me a P.M. or schedule a thrash, and i will come help do whatever you need, or whatever I can do to help.
    Glad your not hurt seriously

  30. Hey, good to hear you're not hurt. I'd make sure my butt was covered on this one, check in with a lawyer and preserve your right to sue just in case you are hurt in some way that doesn't show right off.

As for the cop, a polite letter to his superiors or to the local government might be the thing - I'd just say you found it unprofessional from someone who is supposed to "protect and serve" that he can't even apologize or ask how you're doing after being involved in an accident with you. I wouldn't accuse him of lying or any of that, just that first bit with a basic explanation of what happened.
