I was just wondering how many of you were internet ready in your garages and how do you utilize it.I recently got the wireless hooked up in my shop and so far I love listening to music online hooked to the stereo and the convenience of not going back to the house to look something up.Oh and how do you keep it clean in the shop environment?

I have WI-FI also ... and a lap top ... I could use in the shop but as a general rule ... I prefer to use the desk top in the house.

Got it here at the shop as well as in the garage at the house. I keep the computer in the office here and I have an office in the garage as well. It's invaluable.

The kids use the internet in the shop when they're doing robot building stuff, comes in handy being able to look up parts.

I have an ipod clone in the shop for music, and really have no use for the computer out there for the most part. I guess if I cleaned the place up so I'd have a nice place to sit that would help, but also the problem of the computer getting really dirty makes me not want to bother.

connectivity: we ran a couple cat5 cables out there a few years ago when we redid the phone wiring, and now we also have wifi.

I have an old desk top on a roll around cart in the shop, as I use it to tune my EFI race car. I also use it to run the music in the shop, plus it is nice not having to run in the house to get some info or look up parts stuff, plus the local parts house takes orders for parts over the net so I don't even have to pick up the phone to get parts delivered, now if I could just get the pizza shop to do that! As for how do I keep it clean, I just try to remember to blow some compressed air in the tower once in a while and I have this formed plastic sheet that covers the keyboard and I have an old style CRT moniter that you just cant kill. I'm looking for a better cabinet for the tower but I built one from 3/4" plywood to give it some protection from flying junk. Keith

Naw, I'd probably get even less done than my buddy does since he got satellite TV out there. Guess it comes down to if the garage is for work or escaping your family :)

WiFi in the garage and just about anyplace else. When I want peace and quiet, I get the laptop, put the cover over the sedan and sit inside and compute. No one knows I'm there.:D

I have a 4 or so yr old Powerbook G4 that has some serious battle wounds on the case. I use that in my garage, clean it once a month or so. I find its better to bring that in the garage with me than to have to run up to look something up, cause with the HAMB that can turn into half an hour! I leave it signed on all day every day usually, and just run by on my way to get a tool, refresh it and whatever else I have open.

We are moving soon though to a gutted house that I have to do a lot of wiring work on, with a large attatched garage, and I was thinking of trying to do something more elaborate. My laptop has a 60 gig hard drive so I keep all my music and photos on an external hard drive so I rely on a shitty 4 gig Nano for music. Now, Im thinking of getting a Mac mini for our living room which is right next door to our garage, using that as a Media center of sorts. With a long cable for the monitor and maybe a wireless keyboard and mouse hookup I could use it in the garage, have all my music on it, and not have the possibility of getting a nice machine destroyed or dirty with filler dust or the such. Just an idea! Or just save up for a Macbook Pro and use this ol' skool G4 for garage full time, but dammmmn they cost some coin!

Wireless w/laptop and a 70" big screen TV w/cable and a fridge in the garage. Half the garage is carpeted as well. Since I work for the local cable company I get every single channel imaginable both in my garage and in the house......including porn.....for free. It's one of the perks working for the company.:D

Are you kidding? My whole house is wired! Telco rack in the basement, punchdowns, Cisco shit everywhere (including wireless access points all over in "World Mode"). I am so fucking wired I may as well have a CAT-5 jack in my arm and an antenna coming out my ass!

Shit, there's at least 10 computers up and running here doing things ranging from workstation duty to FTP servers, to netboot, etc...

I have an RV bay next to the shop and turned the 23' itasca into a clean office space with Wi-Fi and a Sony notebook and printer. Also have DishTV and Sirius Radio in the shop. Since there's no resale value on a 15 year old MH with 32,000 miles, I decided to make the space work. Also doubles as a guest room for the grandkids.

I think it's a great idea to have a computer in the gayrage. It doesn't have to be fancy or brand spanking new- just functional for internet and keeping files on it-for example projects, resources, and inspiration (not talking bout porn). Ha, if you're worried about dirt you could have some special computer gloves that..ok I'll stop there I can get a little imaginative sometime.

Personally, I think it sucks having to go back into the house when you're in the middle of stuff to do pesky things like go to the bathroom and look things up on the internet. If ya thought about getting wired in the garage- do it!

I've got very traditional Cat-5 in my shop with an old desktop and an antique CRT sitting on an old modular computer desk. I'm about ready to move a printer out there too.

Its just old junk and I'm making no effort to keep it clean. Old computers are easy to come by.

My wireless reaches out there too, but my notebook stays clean by staying out of the shop.

Its handy for researching parts or checking my email, or just taking a break to visit the HAMB. I highly recommend being wired or wireless in the garage.

Have had internet in the shop for a couple years now. Currently have a laptop using an ethernet bridge to connect to the modem in the house. My laptop has wi-fi but the distance to the house and shop is borderline for it to be reliable.

    LOL! ;)

    It's CAT-5e, if you must know. :D

I'm a Mac consultant here in Kansas City that sold out and got a real job. LOL! I take care of the Macs at a large dot org for a living, and oddly enough (because my other hobby is also my job) I don't get tired of pushing buttons when I get home!

You in the biz, zman? :)
