It's nice to see the steering mounted solidly to the frame. The sheetmetal/cowl mounted steering set ups dont add up IMO.

Looks great sitting on the rubber bands man! Looks like good progress!

Did you figure out the shock issues you were having?

Made a custom steering column. It's 1.5" diameter and 12" long, made from stainless steel.
Since the Mopar box had these six holes, I threaded them to accept 5/16" bolts, to hold the column.
    Tapping the box
    [IMG]
Making a flange. I simply used a 3" washer 1/8" thick, and drilled 6 holes.

    Making sure it fits
    [IMG]
Welded the flange to the column.
On the other end I pressed a slightly oversized bearing on, the create a flared appearance.
Done. The column will hold a 3/4" steering shaft that will receive a tapered and keyed end on one side and a 3/4", 36 sline coupler on the other.
Voila. A custom column drop will have to be created.

WOW!!! Not THAT was a good idea!!!!:eek: I've been thinkin' about columns for my Cuda box quite a bit lately.

Are you going to run a support bearing in the cowl side this time to support your extended pitman arm shaft?

    It's a 1966 manual Mopar box
It looks like it might actually happen
Yeah, it needs to be solid.
Thanks, not sure about the pitman arm bearing yet.
    Thanks, that means alot

  23. Nice work Chris - again!

  24. I'm really impressed with your steering set up. Make sure you post pictures of the extended sector and the steering arm. Taking notes cuz I'm a copy cat.

    Love this thread. Great build.

That steering box is a great solution. Very adaptable and looks good too.
