I grew up in Midland, TX. It's a small west Texas town with a rich racing tradition. VDS racing, Jim Hall, Eddie Hill, the Mabees, John Paul Jr., and many other entities spent at least a littl...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
Are you going to get in trouble again for posting pictures If I was still in Texas this would be a must attend.
That's a great story and the car looks amazing. It's funny that all of this road racing stuff has popped up over the last couple of days.
At the price of addmission I'd have to sit out in the parking lot. I'll see if I can get a Lubbock group together to make the cruise.
A great event for sure, but what's with the ticket prices? A sponsership/fund raising sort of deal I suppose. It would be nice to soak up the atmosphere though.
It's a temporary display, but I have no idea how long it will be there. And yeah... The prices are high, but it is for an excellent cause. It's a fund raiser for the museum.
I saw the Mabee special run at Bonneville in 1953 and met the Mabee's..Great people. I'm wondering if there is anything left of that dynasty.
I drooled on it at last years Classy Chassis Concours event in Houston. Very very nice car. At least I think its the same car....
Me too, Mike you bring the cokes and I'll bring the baloney! LOL What is cocktail attirer anyway? Just kidding, great car, great cause!
Don't think either of the grandsons of Joe are gearheads. Guy was into muscle cars a number of years back but seems to have lost interest. John runs the ranching business and other businesses.
Ryan, Thanks for the Promo on the Mabee Special. Joe stopped by the Museum today to see the car for the first time in over 50 years. You could see the memories flooding back into his mind. It was awsome! I am going to keep the car under wraps until the reception on the 28th. After that it will be on display in the Chaparral Gallery for 3 months. The current owners (Jim and Lea Ann Robinson) sent a 3 inch notebook with the car that is full of vintage pictures and magazine articles about the car. They have done an enormous amount of research. There is a picture of Denny Larson and Roy Rogers with the car. By the way, I am taking the Chaparral 2J (the sucker car) to the Classy Chassy show in Houston in June. If anyone is in the area come by and see me. Thanks again, Ron "Diceman" Low Chaparral Specialist Chaparral Gallery Petroleum Museum
I got this info from My pal Hugh Nutting in Montana: "This is a car that was built in Texas in the 1950s. The body is a Victress S-1 It was designed by Hugh Jorgensen, my auto design instructor at Art Center. He did the design when he was a student then worked for Ford for a couple of years. This car has a Hemi and flathead chassis parts. It had a ZF 4-speed like the one that was in one of the 1956 Daytona Corvettes for a while. It was found in Mexico - trashed. A new body was found for the restoration. I think the owner lives in Indiana. Years ago it was in a magazine story titled "the fastest sports car in the world" ."
 1 victress.jpg k guy mabee spl.jpg k victress Guy M.jpg k victress book.jpg k victress mabee.jpg
Hey Mike you can sit with Terry and me in the parking lot. Come on down. There will probably be about 6 to 10 cars from my club along with the vette club who will probably have 10 - 12 cars.
