Back about 1961-62 I well remember sitting in the grandstands, with my dad, at the So. Dak. state fair, as he whipped up on the competition. He was 'da man' in the IMCA sprints in those days.

  5. Yep ! :)

I think the no. 63 "cigar" car was the one he drove to most (if not all) of his four IMCA championships. The other Wagner team car (no. 62) was the former Elmer George and A.J. Foyt Traco Chevy.

Ok this is slightly off topic BUT last summer I drove around to some buildings here in Indy that had racing history. Well a buddy of mine wanted to see one of them Mike Boyles race shop. Pretty famous Chicago Union boss/mobster, anyway I took him by there today pretty rough neighborhood now, so bad in fact that I used my second amendment rights when I went there. One of the doors to the place is unlocked and I am sure it has squatters living in it. Here are some pictures of the building that I took the first time I went there. Oh and Josh I liberated a brick from the building for you. Late in 1933 a powerful, cantankerous Chicago unionist named Michael J. ("Umbrella Mike") Boyle took umbrage at the management of the swank Edgewater Beach Hotel. Some said (and Mike Boyle denied) that the hotel had refused to let him live there; others, that a dispute over recognition of his electrical union got his dander up. Tough "Umbrella Mike"*knows much about the dark & bloody side of Chicago unionism, twice went to jail (for contempt of court, conspiracy to restrain trade). He was also tough enough to call out Edgewater Beach electricians, declare a strike. Allied with the electricians were waiters, cooks, busboys, et al., who joined Mike Boyle's picket line on April 19, 1934.

Four hours a day, six days a week thereafter, paid pickets patrolled the Edgewater Beach. The hotel continued to do business, A. F. of L. musicians continued to play inside. Strikers forgot what the strike was about, their unions spent $300,000 in picket wages. As suddenly and mysteriously as it began, the long strike ended last week at terms "satisfactory to all concerned." The terms (according to Edgewater Beach Manager William Dewey): no recognition, no rehiring, no more pay, nothing for the strikers except a good rest.

*So called because he used to carry an umbrella rain or shine, hang it on the bar rail in Johnson's saloon, and stand innocently by while contractors dropped tribute into the folds.

Here is some info about "Umbrella" Mike Boyle

Hell no! Its the real thing. I take the long way into Indy everytime just to drive by it and tip my hat.
The story goes.. (Roy, correct what I miss but be nice about it:D)

The Glass company put together enough money one year to build an Indy car and go race it. In practice or qualifying the driver spun it and backed into the wall.. Missing the race the owners instead of being Dejected and pissed said, "No problem, we'll just put the car on the roof of our shop as a "Eye Catcher"... And its still there today. Its amazing it hasn't been stolen... I've had some Drukin', HELL RAISING NIGHTS in Indy (Roy seen some of them) and what stopped us from trying to get it or parts is what I hope stopped others...

    RESPECT!!!!

  23. Are you sure it isn't Greg Schneider ? He was the last owner of the Foyt/Traco Chevy that I'm aware of. He has been here buying up a bunch of old sprint car and supermod stuff I had. He lived in the Twin Cities at the time. He also bought a local guy's roadster/sprint car that was originally an Indy roadster.

Yeah, Thats probably him.. I suck at spelling (names especially). Well, I just go back to my same thought... At least he is spending his money on race cars and preserving the past, instead of other "Rich guy hobbies" like horses..

I gotta get a little off topic here for a sec but its a funny story.

John Mugavin, a GREAT ol' time "Been there done that" racer around these parts, tells the best stories!! Anyways, he was telling my dad and I one day about the time he invested a little money into a race horse that a fellow racer and car owner with a lot of money was going to buy. They bought it, got it ready to race (training and what not) and then came its first race. Well, it didn't do so well. It ran about the middle of the pack. When they brought the horse back into the stables John, being the racer he is said, "Ok, what do we do to make her faster!" The rich guy and his associates looked at him kinda confused and said, "Well, nothing John, Thats it. He is what he is"
Thats when John said he knew horse racing wasn't for him, he said (his excact words) "Man, I wanted to get a drill out and drill out the horses nose a bit so it could breath better, then saw about an inch off of his inside hoofs to put a little stagger in it.. You know!! Make the bastard run good! They wanted to feed him some grass and say try harder next time... TO HELL WITH THAT! I went back racing cars!"
