Alex and I spent this weekend at his shop working on the Starliner. Lace paint jobs suck ass! We have about 15 or more hours just in the last two days getting the two long top panels ready to spray....But damn, it's going to be worth it! I think lace panels is a four man job, but it works with two.

    Here's where we started yesterday.

We started on the passenger rear 1/4. [IMG]

We rough cut the panel shape in the lace.

This lace. Which is different from what the top and the hood center and trunk will be.

Alex is getting pretty good with the scissors.

After it was trimmed and taped down. A TON of time was spent just getting the pattern to line up straight.

    Both rear 1/4s taped.

Alex's cool idea for the gaps. More later.

My idea: use clear double stick tape near the edge on the more difficult areas. It actually worked great!

Then we taped over it with masking tape.

Alex does the second side. He took welding rod and bent it to shape to hold the lace down in the gaps. It worked really well. Low-buck ingenuity at it's finest.

    The payoff!

Sweet panels! Next comes an all-over coat of candy on the panels and some edge fading.

Check the gaps. The lace wraps around the lip!

The center of the hood, top and trunk are lace, but a different pattern of lace.

  24. I think we have a Tech Week winner and its not even Tech Week. Please put this in the Tech section since we all just got a lesson on lace painting. Great job Alex and Kirk.

Question. Do you put any adhesive on the back of the lace? I've had a bit of a problem with the paint "fogging" beneath the lace.

  27. I just LOVE the way everyone is "blowing smoke" over this car. Time for the truth.
Its too low! You'll kick the rocker and break a toe getting in that damn thing Kirk! Lace is for panties and pearls are for necklaces! You've ruined a Starliner! I hope youre happy. This is the kinda shit that happens when you let Nancy build a custom!

That car is gonna be just beautiful Kirk! I love the Starliners. My favorite 60's car. VERY nice work!
