1934 ford sedan roof fill "what to use"??

I just sold my 34 ford tudor sedan deluxe to a customer of mine. I just have to many projecs of my own to do. Part of the deal is that Im the one to do some sheetmetal work on it for him. We are going to fill the roof and I was wondering what the best donor is for the fill. I used a 65 mustang top skin for the 31 Model A and need a couple options for the 34. Pics would be great also. I think he would like to go smooth but ribbed options would be considered. Anybody??

 

Hey,

For years full sized station wagon roof panels were all the rage for
filling in A-Bomb & '32-'33 sedan roofs. Given that they are gettin'
on the "endangered list" maybe early 80's mid sized wagons w/o
the ribs. Some of the ugly-assed GM full sized sedans had roofs
with a pleasing crown, the ones from the early 90s.
Beware! some of the late model roof panels have a shit-load of
mastic/glue sticking them to their frames.

My top was filled with a '63 Chevy station wagon roof.
I'll try to dig up some photos of the process...

 

A 67-72 suburban works good. Smooth top. A little hard to come by now though.

Walden Speed Shop in Pomona has a ready made insert for your car. Pricey, but right on the money and would probably save money in the long run. Just a thought!

 

My neighbor has a 33 Chevy 4 door. He used a mid 80s dodge caravan roof.

 

I was gonna say...... didnt the early Dodge mini vans have ribbed roofs? The 1st gen. boxy ones? I think they did.

 

I used an early 60's Mopar wagon roof on the one that I did about 10 years back. Nice fine rib pattern.

I have used 57 -58 ford , 57 being , 58 4door smooth,58 2door have down ribs, all fit like a glove...

Take it from the 245/145 series and turn it backwards.

 

I've been considering a Dodge mini van roof to fill my '30 sedan roof. The ribbing looks like it would be strong and the contour looks about right. Those early station wagon roofs are getting quite rare.

I haven't got it installed yet, but I'm going to use a 55 Chevy wagon roof in my '33. It has a good side to side curve and should lay fine front to back.

 

I used an 88' Cherokee roof to fill in my Hup. The Hup 417 body is identical to a 33-34 Ford sedan. 4 ribs on top sort of gives it a serious, focused look.

62-63 ford wagon

 

I used a panel from Bobby Walden on my '35 Tudor..........less work and a better fit than anything you could get out of a donor car.

 

Ask for Bobby. His filler piece is really nice.

 

Here is my chopped 34 with a mid 90's mini van top, with the ribbs on it, which is what I wanted. Sorry have the pics on another computer, but you get the drift.

 

I used a 1976 Seville Cad. roof in my 33 tudor. Tex Smith did an artical on it and an other one in September 87 Hot Rod Mechanics page 38-39.
The top fits so good you could only slide a buisness card under it at any point.

just got my rod and custom today. they have an tech piece about filling roofs with a walden insert. there project is a 33 34 two door sedan check it out.
