Tech: Gasser straight axle Puddin style

  1. Nicely done, I really dig the use of the extra steering arm for the drag link.

Awesome post, definitely shows the huge amount of work that you guys had to put into this car to make it right. Good choice on the chromoly axle, looks like it will last a lot longer. Your welder friend is a real pro!

OK, I've been up all night working. Later this afternoon I'll finish up with pictures of the chrome work, reassembly, engine travel limiters, etc. and the maiden voyage!

Killer work MANG! I noticed your avatar is the straight axle version.....so you've already been to the track with it! Awesome!
The attention to detail is where its at. The pinching the frame, the bullnosing the ends of the frame, the drilling the motor mounts. All those details are what makes this so much better than any other hack job.

Excellent planning and execution! And I particularly like the couple of extra inches of wheelbase.

    Nice!

Very nice! Solid engineering, cleverness, and style. That's what it's all about.

A list of sources would be cool- When you chose to get stuff 'from everywhere' it left me wondering exactly where everywhere was!

Killer stuff- I might have to do this one day, and this is how I'll do it.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Here's some more.

I remember after taking everything apart, facing the decision on what to do with all the new parts. Powder coating is too modern and I thought the car deserved more that just gloss black paint on the axle.

I called a guy I had been using for polishing aluminum and magnesium and asked if he could chrome everything since polishing was the biggest part of the job. He quoted $150 to do the axle so I loaded EVERYTHING in the truck and dropped it off at his shop. Turns out the leaf springs ended up being the deal breaker since there are like 12 pieces. I think the total bill ended up being around $900 for the axle, drag link, tie rod, 3 steering arms, pitman arm, shackles, all the leafs and hardware and a mounting bar for the fuel tank. I was very pleased when I picked the stuff up only a week later:

    Oh... dude.

Chrome parallel leaves and tri-5s are like peas and carrots. Great tech thread, the work is top notch. And the car is looking great too! Love the wheelbase change.

    Hurry and post more. ;)
