    Hi
Just trying to sort out vacation for next year and want to do the 60th, as we were there for the 50th, but have heard rumours that some people have managed to book hotel rooms in some of the casinos, but I have been on the phone to most of them tonight, and they all say that they are not taking bookings until next January, is this right? Also what is the best time to get there, as can't remember last time, but have been told from the start day Monday would be the best time?
    Thanks.
    Sue and Dave.

In '08 tech inspection will start on Aug 17th. Sunday. Running will begin on the 18th, Monday. There will be most cars around then.

Yep, the SCTA site says the same ... http://www.scta-bni.org./

The only thing that I see is, with TECH starting SUNDAY the 17th - as opposed to to the usual FRIDAY; - two days earlier - there are a LOT of people who better modify their vacation dates!

Many count on the FIRST SATURDAY as being the beginning of Speed Week because they can't take a full week or don't have any left.
(they usually head home late Sunday or early Monday)

Will it ease the "room issue??" That's a tough call.
Changing the start date might keep some people - and racers - from attending.

The hotels "gouge" everyone for the full week as it is.
They know when the dates are; they'll just move their schedules forward.

Some folks that were there this past Aug were able to book their rooms for next year, me included.

At the drivers meeting this year they mentioned a number of things as reasons why moving the date was benifical. One of them being the "racers" aren't vi-ing for the same rooms with the gamblers that come in just for the weekends on the buses. The dude that owns/manges three of the biggie casinos also stated that they will not book any other events in Wendover, IE, golf, keno, poker, whatever, during Speed Week 2008 and that Wendover next year will be Speed Week and nothing else, just like the old days.

For those that are traveling any distance, this actualy works out better cuz I only have to take off one week instead of two as I can leave on Friday after work and be there in 3 days. When speed week starts on Friday (tech) I had to take off that whole week in order to be there by Friday.

They also stated at the drivers meeting that if it doesn't work out that they would revert back BUT they wanted to give this a try.

Hey Sue, i don't have any info but, I'll be there too. even if I have to sleep in my car!

  10. I tried several of the hotels and they all said they would not book untill the 1st of the year. I figured I would never get a room at the Nugget but called for the hell of it an almost fell over when they took my reservation.

  11. You were able to get your room in August? I didnt even think the dates were set for 08 at that time. The new dates really mess it up for us West Coasters that were able to make a long weekend of it.

After the 07 fiasco and having to wait till Jan to get rooms, Im still worried I wont be able to get one and have to stay in Wells again.

Can anyone give me a couple suggestions on hotels worth staying at? If all goes well I will be there this year for at least a couple days, which brings another question...which are the "best" days to be there?

    Then ... if you can't get a room at any of the places Denise listed;

there is always a ... "tent and a sleeping bag" at "bend in the road!"
("bend in the road" is where the paved access road from I-80 turns to head out on to the salt)
Some people bring motor homes and camp at "bend in the road"; but there isn't any power hookups.

There is a truck stop at the intersection of I-80 and the access road that has SHOWERS - and a towel - for a couple of bucks.

Cool, thanks a lot for the info. I had heard about camping at the "bend" but my dad is travelling with me and I don't think he want's to sleep on the ground at his age.

Boy Wonder would sleep at the Bend...I'm thinking the wife won't be up for that though.
This is a great post...I didn't know the dates had been moved, and will be one of those people that benefits from the change as it's a two or three day drive from Georgia out there. This year we pulled Boy Wonder out of school for a week, and by the time we got there (wed a.m.) a lot had been done already. I was going to pull him out earier so we'd be there for the first couple days, and now I don't have to.
Thanks Denise for the list of hotels; I'll call on Jan. 1!

I'm sure it's a little too early but does anyone have an extra room they booked and now can not use due to last minute changes? I am looking for one room for the first few days, Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, or so.

    Thank you.

    rodncustom,
My current reservation is in Wells, but I'm finding out what the cancellation policy is at various motels in Wendover. for example, if it's 10 days, I call them 10-12 days before my arrival, and see if any rooms have become available. You may be surprised, especially with people cancelling plans over gas prices.
