on my A pick up i went with both. used a porsche 944 sunroof. the cab is streched 4 inches and flush fit doors adding another inch it is about 3-5 inches smaller then a coupe roof.
roof panel will raise up in the back of it can be pulled out. they are power or manual and can be bought cheap
I'm shooting for the best of both worlds on mine... Going to leave it completely open with no bows, but I'm planning on a scratch-made removable insert that I can put in place for road trips and such. Sorry, no pictures worthy of showing at this point...
Not intentionally (the fabric top in mine turned into a cape ). Leaning toward filling it at this point. Yeah, 'Destructo's stance is killer.
I am wanting to build a removable roof insert for my 31 A coupe. I did one out of marine grade vinyl but I dont like the way it fits and the studs that are screwed into the top. Did you get yours built?
Mr. FORD's coupe is open. Search for his posts. Personally, I really like the open top with a snap on cover. Another Mark, Headhunter, has a 31 tudor set up that way. You'll see both at the HAMB drags today.
My roof cover is held on with domes,keeps the sun off and most of the rain out and can be removed in a minute to have as an open top. Good on hot nights.

Just a thought, but what about fitting a folding cloth sunroof, similar to what 1950s VWs have. Looks almost like a stock top insert when closed and pretty easy to fit too.
Here's mine. Reinforced the opening with steel but kept the stock style wood bows and put a snap on top done with convertable top material. Works good and stays dry.
Rag tops. I love those. http://www.streetbeatcustoms.com/Ragtops-Sunroofs/ has them. I haven't seen any on rods but I haven't payed too close attention.
i am planning on using one of these. if you go back into the old posts, there are a few about this company. a lot on the samba, too. not the best reputation, but where else are you going to find one?
An old aftermarket one in the junkyard? The new ones always seem to be infested with crummy looking plastic air deflectors and fittings. The old ones have nice aluminium rails.
I have the best of both worlds. I put a snap on roof on the 29 Pk Up. So I can unsnap it or leave it on. We have lots of sun (Very hot) here, so most of the time its on. Put a slider rail in front to prevent rain coming in. Top is off or on in 1min. Down here the locals call it a Biminy top. Iceman
Made mine from 1/2 X1/2 box,bent it over the rear wheel to follow the contour of the top.Had two cross bars. Home Depot mesh. Worked killer at keeping the sun out,but breathed at the same time. Just an idea..... It worked great.Some glue,some clamps,24hrs wait,drill & tap some screws... presto- removable top that doesn't fry your skin in the sun. Just an alternative......
I have looked around and found them through VW people. For the amount of money an original costs, I would rather just put the time into a new one making it look old and nice.
I am planning the same. I perfer the open top with bows but will need a top for our spring floods, fall freezes. I am thinking the sliding top will work well. There is a great sedan in an old Street Rodder rag that was done with the top from a VW bus. There is new finished top wood in the car and I'll run brass hardware for the top.
