Concept GC40 I wanted to take this one as far away from stock as I could. Don't need a trunk or a hood or fenders or running boards. For me, these elements only hide the stylistic beauty of the 40's curvy body. Yet, I wanted to keep elements of "traditional" rod styling. If you win the first H.A.M.B. art challenge or not I think events like this give us all a great opportunity to do our best work. I've already seen plenty of it here! Awesome work. My wife is a graphic designer and uses Illustrator and Photoshop all the time. She is very impressed with this. Nice job!
Alrighty, here is my go at it. This is the "Moonshiner's Wet Dream." My 40 has subtle body mods that include a mild chop and shaved handles, other than that all the bright work remains, save for the bumper guards. She sits low over widen 16" shoebox rims sporting '49-'50 caps, on equally wide white walls. The split wishbone "truck arm" suspension hangs a quick change rear that is located with a watts link to keep its movement precise. The rear sway bar keeps the ass square as she is pushed through the twisties of the back roads. The front suspension has been subframed with an IFS that sports disc brakes and a hefty sway bar to keep the yellow jackets on their toes. The power plant is a no F-ing around flathead. Featuring stroked and poked dimensions...oh and a wicked Hilborn mechanical injection. Yeah, she goes just fine. The tranny is something modern; a wicked 5 or 6 speed manual, to keep that flatty in a happy RPM zone....because it cool. Oh and there is a toggle switch inside to turn the brake and tail lights off, so as to disappear before the fuzz's eyes. Well a boy can dream can't he? The Moonshiner's Wet Dream;

That's amazing Rikster, at first I thought you photoshopped in your own design with the backdrop. It looks just uncanny. Goes to show what talent, appreciation and Photoshop can create now a days. Great job! Clark: I could never have come close to such a well thought out design as your boattail, looks traditional and flows very very well. I certainly with wanting to see it built. Like many have already said, it's hard to argue with what Natas has submitted. Some of the nicest shading I've seen recently. This challenge is a brilliant idea and goes to show what an enourmous pool of talent we have here on the HAMB

I just can't believe the incredible talent on the HAMB, it just blows me away!!! The degree of detail etc. does truly make many of these masterful works of art!!! BUT- I hope that it doesn't scare off the less talented artists, I would hate to see this turn into an art contest rather than a design contest. I hope that in the end, the design is what is judged, not the fancy shading or the cool backgrounds. I think that stuff is great, and those of you with the talent to do it, please do, I'm a bit of an artist myself (though not on the level of some of you) and I know artists can't help themselves, so please continue, but in the end, I hope the ideas will be judged, not the quality of the rendering. So if you think your rendering skills are not up to the level of many others here don't let that stop you, lets see your design. PS I'm lovin' this thread!
I'm totally blown away on the response so far, incredible. That being said.. please remember.. only post art that is 1. your art. 2. art created for this challenge. otherwise it gets a bit confusing when it's time to pick a winner. Thanks! nate
This was a fun exercise. I think it is hard to improve on a stock Forty, but if I did, it would be a full custom, chopped, channeled and sectioned. Side grilles flowing into side trim. Reshaped front grille similiar to Zephyr. Skirts, frenched headlights, and door pull wheels. Here's my concept.
'40 Aussie Ute, two door coupe with a bed. Retained all the character of this funky fourty ,just dropped it, now ready to drive it.
NOT a new drawing, but what I apparently thought a '40 coupe should look like in 1956. Can you tell it was drawn in class?
Never photoshopped a car before. I teach it as part of a web design course, but that's just shapes and web site stuff. So nothing fancy here. Just a quick little 15 minute photoshop session. Before pic: After pic:

Still workin' on mine... but I thought I'd post a little progress just to show I did get off my butt and do at least a little bit... gonna be adding color, etc. I plan to edit this post by adding the final art, and perhaps another progress shot or two in between.
