I'm considering trading for a 55 Ford Customline. It's a 2-door with a 289 in it. Anybody got pics of a similar car? Looking for ideas of what I could do with it. Thinking it might be nice to bag it.
I was looking at a 56 a couple years ago... as much as I dig Kustoms, if I would've got that car it would go more hot rod: > Hunkered down in the front, near stock height in the rear > Minimal body mods, just some trim shaving... probably just the hood & trunk emblems > Blackwalls on chrome reverses > painted a solid color: black, light blue, or maroon > a roll bar > nearly stock interior 'cept floor shifter, tach, and maybe an aftermarket steering wheel
I'm thinking somewhere in-between. Airbags, solid color, maybe flamed hood. Possibly lakes, and see what I can do to hop-up the 289 a bit. Maybe bigger wheels/tires in the back if there's room. Interior is real bare on the one I'm looking at, and I would probably keep it that way. - except for some striping of course.
The alexander brothers "victorian" has alot of great ideas. This is my old car that I flaked and other things the present owner says he built (Pfft.)
It's kind of funny how 55-56 Ford customlines are always thought of as mild customs. I like them too but a 55-56 Chevy would often be thought of as a gasser. I want mine to be a 50's sleeper with an early NASCAR influence. Maybe a 'shine hauler.
Check out my avatar or my MySpace Page for more pics of my 55 Ford Customline. Its got a Fairlane Front end on it and radiused wheel wells. Got a 351 cleveland motor with a tunnel ram ready to go in, just doing some engine bay mods right now. www.myspace.com/scooter4x is the myspace page for more pics. P.S. there are a bunch of pics from my car clubs trip to Americruise in one of the folders on there. So........if you arent a 55 ford guy there are lots of others too.
here's what ford's designers were thinking at the time... and then there's this one.. I think there's better pics in the barris how to books.
I remember one in the junkyard that was done up back in the day in a sort of a Mexcan Road Race style - someone painted it red and it had two narrow white stripes down the driver's side hood and deck. I think it had numbers on the doors too. Don't remember if the side trim had been removed or was just missing. But it was just a stock street car, a 2-door sedan, in fact it must have once been green because the interior was still two-tone green. Lots of odd stuff in that yard, in another spot was a pretty solid '53-4 Ford someone gave up on after transplanting a 70's inline six into it.
Probably not to worry in kansas, but the front crossmembers are bad to rust out around here on those cars. I found that common after I bought a 55 sevral years ago, just something to consider when looking at one.
That Watson Green '55 is killer! I love '55-'56 Fords almost as much as I love '57 Fords. And they have to have white walls.
