hole flanger dies

anyone got a good lowbuck way to make hole flanger dies without a lathe. in case you have no idea what i am talking about I am talkin bout the things that make those lightening or swiss cheese or speed holes look pretty with a nice flange or bell or dimple or whatever you may call them around the holes.

 

Just posted in another thread. Irvan-Smith gets about $30.00 for a single set, be hard to make them for thirty bucks.

Wood Working 101, Plywood or hardwood cut to size, mount a bolt through the center, chuck it in the drill press and go at it with a air or belt sander. Female side, cut to size and file bevelled edge to match. If nothing else, you will have something to remember Mr Flanger by! Couldn't resist.

 

Who cares? He was a real hole anyway.

Are we talking about a dimple-die here? If I can get one for $30, I'd love it...

Tricktools were $85 more expensive, guess you are paying for the "TRICK"


Now for smaller holes. I made mine. Should have added that on the other thread. I took bearings and welded all thread to them. The welded a thick washer to a small piece of tubing to make a cup. Then all you have to do is drill a hole the size of the all-thread in the metal. Put the all thread through the hole in the metal then put the cup on the all thread (cup side down) add a nut to the all thread and crank it tight so as you are pulling the bearing through the hole using the tightening forces of the allthread.

 

Irvan-Smith shows a nine piece set for $250. Most are around $30 ea. Have not seen or used them, but I've been shoping too.

What gage metal are you dimpling?

 

I would say mostly stuff no thicker than 18 gauge. Trying to make these on my own since I dont have tons of money and thought you guys might have made your own.

well trick tools dimple dies can do 1/8 inch plate and 1/4 inch plate
