I was a kid in the Fifties here in Missouri and as I remember-what I saw was pretty much akin to what east and west coasters saw..... 49 Fords [with skirts]- draggin tail- 49 Chevy coupes doin the same game... A hot rod was typically a flathead ford powered early20s thrugh late 30s car[mostly coupes] with no hood or fenders and engine details exposed as eye candy,much like today... I believe if there were an accurate way to account for numbers-the midwest would stand tall as either coast in numbers of hotrods at the time..... It still is heavily hotrod populated today too!

Cool pictures! I wish I had some pictures of my uncles' cars... but I don't think there were ever pictures to be had... just stories. But, from the stories I've heard I'll agree with the performance over looks... fast first - looks don't win races. A guy I know asked if I was building my '31 East Coast or West Coast style... Nope. I don't think he meant it as a yes / no question... ha ha

thats the way to i do body work....5 lb sledge and coat hanger for welding rod! the only thing missing is the brick from moms planter.
Hmmm. Not sure about those black/white pics. They're cool. but how did the car end up looking? What about the Alexander brothers? Ohio flame jobs? Did you also know that in Pennysylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, each individually has more registered rods than California? That's a fact, too.
Mine's been around St Louis pretty much all its life. At least back into the late 40's early 50's is what the previous, previous owner says. And no thats not a typo. Its taken a few trips down the old Alton Dragway too!!
Here's a couple of restored mid west cars from the late '50's, both currently in Tulsa. Rollin' Stone was built in Dallas as a drag car in about '56 (It won NHRA B Street Roadster Class in '57) and my black roadster was built in Tulsa in '58 as a Street Rod.
