Totally insane race car....and you would have to be mad to drive it too

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by paulatxntric, Aug 14, 2007.

  1. seen racing on sunday.......5 litre (302ci) air cooled, Jap V8...total loss oiling system (it just runs out all over the car/driver/floor)..aero engine from before Louis Blereo (think you spell it like that) first flew across the English channel ... well before ww1....
The guy drove it like a bastard, opposite lock on every corner, smoking the tyres as he was sliding.....and no front brakes
    check out the chassis!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    yes it really is!!!!

  5. HOLY CRAP! Its like a Morgan Trike, except with less brains.

  6. Unsafe??? it's nearly 100 years old, I don't know any 100 year olds that are safe!!!!

One of the other GNs (it's a GN!) went off at Gerrards corner, the racing was a t Mallory Park..hit a tyre wall and was on fire at one point....driver has no seat belt and I think came out of the car...he's fine, if bruised and still has his balls of steel intact

I think oak frame rails are very traditional.

  9. When tyres were skinny and drivers were fat ! There is a Lagonda at the track lately that is also a monster - 1930s I think.

That's one neat ride from back when men were men and machines were built from whatever they had. I'd love to hear it run.

I was just at the Henry Ford Museum, and saw the 999 that Barney Oldfield raced and was amazed that it too has a wooden frame.

At least it won't rust. Termites might be another issue altogether though.

I love it. Got a whole "steampunk" feel to it.

Actually that is a J.A.P. motor as in J. A. Prestwick. They are best known for their motorcycle motors which were the hot shit in the early speedway days.

That's a pretty fine level of detail and workmanship for an old race car.

I love it. I would drive it, People fly airplanes with wooden wings and fabric covering so why not a wooden frame? Wooden boats work fine with big ass engines too. This post is why I am on the HAMB too damn much.

I'd love to hear it run!! What does that thing SOUND like anyway???

Some years ago I attended an event at Monterey where they ran a bunch of stuff like that and the most memorable things are the sounds and smells of those old motors running full-tilt!!!

That's the equivalent of a flat track motorcycle. They don't run brakes either. If you've ever watched those boys race really hard your first thought is, "how do they get their legs AND balls in the same pair of pants?" :D

  29. the smell of castrol r and the noise made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!!
the Napier Bentley could be heard all the way around the track, popping and banging on over run...with cable brakes the engine braking was the best way to slow down
