Hub caps on traditional 50's hot rod

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrblack30, Jul 16, 2007.

  1. I am looking for pictures of 50's rods cars that used hubcaps. I know that the moon disks were somewhat popular but what other caps found their way onto the rods of the day? Looking for pictures of cars that didn't use the traditional Ford caps and rings.

Sombrero, Spinner, disc, Cadillac, DeSoto, What were they using?

man, I wonder who lifted those caps!

  5. In the August edition of HOTROD mag there is a article that pays ohmage to Robert Peterson and in that article there is a 32 coupe in front of the then publishing office that was sporting some really cool caps. Anyone have any pics of that car and know what caps are on that car?

    Fiestas definitely take the cake.

Slag, I don't think you pictured all of your Caddy sombreros. They were way more impressive when you had them stacked to the roof. Haha.

  13. Tony, I was asking because, I recently found and put on a set of 49'-50' DeSoto caps and I am on the fence about them. Part of me is saying HELL yeah while the other is saying "you put caps on that car?" I think I am gonna leave them on for Syracuse and let everyone else influence me on keeping or getting rid of them.

For me, it just doesn't get much better than 56 Olds caps.

  17. I like the looks of the spinners and the tri-bar, but prefer the smooth looks.

Just about any cap from just about any car from 1948-1955 or so looks good on just about any rod. By the mid '50s the rods and kustoms in my old magazines tend to have chromed rims, but prior to that nearly all of them are running full wheel covers. Shop around until you find something you like, then put them on your car. And don't let anyone influence whether you keep them on except you: if you like the way they look, leave them on. If not, take them off.

  24. I have seen that they used the Ford centers and rings frequently through the late fourties. I often thought they looked good with them on. When they started producing the larger one piece caps, a whole new world of looks and possabilities opened up. I was just currious as to what caps did they primarily use? and what parts of caps did they start to mix and match like here in this picture.

I am just like they were. Not enough scratch to buy the chromed reverse wheels.

I think there were a lot of Caddy, Olds, Lincoln, and Dodge caps used in the mid '50s. And the aftermarket smoothies. It really was a free-for-all before that, though - you don't see the same caps over and over until more like the mid-50s when everyone decided Caddy, Olds Fiesta, and Dodge Lancers were "the" hubcaps. Prior to that it was totally up to what the owner could find and/or liked. '53 BelAir would be a nice (and different) choice, as would a lot of the Chrysler, DeSoto, etc.

  26. Yeah, I am using the 49-50 Desoto caps and like I said earlier I am on the fence if I like them yet.

Sounds good to me. You can always swap'em out later if you find something else that you like better. That's the true beauty of hubcaps!

Early GM sombrero's are about the coolest hubcaps around! My opinion of course.

  29. 55 Buick caps were also popular.

I will use these wide trim-rings on my car.
Not sure if they where all that popular back in the fifties , but I like the way they look :)
