Did you find a rear end Mike?

 

Plus...
84-92 Thunderbird V6/V8 = same as the 86-93 Mustang 4x4.25" pattern.
87-88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 61.5" w/disc brakes. 4x4.25" bolt pattern.
84-92ish Lincoln Mark VII & 82-end of rear drive production Continential also 61.5" wide w/ disc brakes, BUT 5x4.5" pattern.
94-98 Mustang 60.25" w/disc brakes and 5x4.5" pattern
99-04 Mustang 61-5/8" w/disc brakes and 5x4.5"

For what it's worth... the Explorer 8.8" is the best in my opinion.

Here's why.....

Factory 31 spline axles
Factory Traction-Lok on the majority of them
Came with 3.55's at a minimum, but most got 3.73's & many got 4.10's
Disc brakes
Integral parking brake (inside the back of the disc brakes)
5x4.5" bolt pattern

 

not all exploders had rear disc plus figgure if ya DO get a disc rear it's gonna need e-brake shoes.....

You are correct. I forgot to say that the disc brake axles showed up with the 94(?) rounded body style and were around till the new body style came out a couple years ago. The earlier Explorer's did have 10" drums and the good axles and ratios and the 5x4.5" bolt pattern too.

 

Pretty sure you mean a 5x4.5" bolt pattern.

I concur that 59 inch width is a little wide. The '59 Galaxy rear under mine is about 57 1/2 inches wide and fits like it was built for the old girl. I did run a '67 Mustang rear for a time (about 59 1/2) and it pushed the tires out a bit far.

One thing to note is that if you are going to run hubcaps, you have a little more room to work with, since there are a bunch of different backspacings available these days.

 

got a 94 out back with drums but disc MIGHT have been an option...99(i think) is the last year without IRS...

Sam, do you still have the source for the 8.8 rears?

 

Did you pass up on a drum brake 8.8? I think my Mustang 8" is going to be too narrow for my 46.

 

I asked Steve @Pasco for an Explorer disc brake rear and he had one. I didn't look for drum brake rears. Mike
