I posted this before ---but since this is Tech Week,I' ll do it again.

I used a set of 56 F-100 brakes on my 29 roadster. I wanted to use Buick drums but F100 brakes are 11 inch and early Ford and Buick are 12 inch. I found a set of out-of-spec Buick drums for $20.00 and used them as covers for the F-100 brakes---the F-100 brakes are completely stock and the Buick drum slip over the stock drums. I turned the lip of the Buick drum down about 1/16 to clear the backing plate.I used a 1/4 wheel spacer between the two drums to get the spacing I wanted and used Monroso longer studs. Been driving it for a month or so and everything looks and works good.

I did the same thing on my roadster several years ago. I now have 111,000 miles on it with no problems. I think it actually helps cool the brakes. I've never had a problem with brake fade.

Thats a neat trick, I did that to my Roadster pu a few yrs back, and f100's and Buick drums stacked works well. and like you said if you turn the edge back you can't tell they are covers. Cool post.--TV

Great use for otherwise useless drums. Lets recycle all those old Buick drums that are too far gone to be cut on a brake lathe!

I need a set of out of spec Buick drums. Preferably 45 fins.

I love this idea, and have a wonderfully working set of F1 brakes on my car and this would really help the look. If any one has any please let me know. Thanks, Hot Rod Willie!

  16. Would this trick work on '40 Ford brakes?

This seems like a good plan. I use those brakes on my roadster and just happen to have an old set of buick drums just sitting around..... sounds like a plan.
    thanks

This seems like the olds valve covers on the smallblock to me. Just my 2 cents.

For '40 Ford brakes, you use the Buick drum instead of the '40 drum as they are both the same diameter.

  21. I have read some tech articles, but maybe I missed something. Do they just swap out? Do you have to re-drill the bolt pattern, or any other mods?

  22. ...more like thinking outside the "drum". ha ha

I have been searching for a set also. The last swap I went to I found a set of 90 fins, but I really want the 45 finned drums.

I like this idea. i have been searching f100\f1 brakes. you can pretty much get everything new from online parts stores but i haven't seen repro backing plates. Where do i find them?

also, how well do these front brakes stop a fenderless model sedan? this car may turn into my daily driver and i was leaning towards discs. But man, this Tech is cool.

  27. we've got a pile of old out of spec buick drums at work........ i like this idea!

Ok - I have a stupid question. I haven't paid a lot of attention to rods the past few years. Exactly what is entailed in getting F-100 brakes and spindles on early Ford Axles? I must have slept through that development.

moonglow, this has been covered many times here. If you use 37-48 ford spindles the backing plates will work. there is a bearing adapter kit that speedway sells to use the hubs on the earlier ford spindles

  30. I need one 90 fin... and to think, I was going to make a tool stand out of the 90 fin I do have....

    V V V I can trade you some stickers for one!! V V V
