331 Hemi question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fox Valley Hot Rods, Mar 8, 2007.

  1. I did a couple of searches and found some good info, but not what I needed. I have a 4x2 intake off a 331 Hemi, can anyone tell me what other engines this will fit?

    Not always...

It shouldn't fit the 392 because of the higher deck height.

Will bolt up to a 331 or 354 but is there provisions for a water neck and thermostat on the manifold? 331's had no water crossover so there were provisions for water flow thru the manifold. 354's had a water crossover up front that enable the thermstat and return neck to be positioned there.

    Pictures of the manifold?

Even though the 392 has a taller deck height, it has more meat on the intake side if the heads to make up for this. This means the 331/354 intake may work for a 392 as well. Hot Heads makes a pair of shims so you can use the better-flowing 331/354 heads on a 392 without changing intakes.

I think the only difference in Chrysler hemi intakes is the water crossover for '55 as scootermcrad already said. Tex Smith's 'Complete Chrysler Hemi Engine Manual' has a lot of good info on all the mopar hemis.

  5. Junkmonger is right on. The intakes all swap in the chrysler hemis. The 392 heads do have more on the intake side. 354 heads can be run on a 392 with the spacers. Putting 392 heads on a 331/354 would mean milling the intake side of the heads to fit.

As mentioned, stock they will all interchange. The 392 heads have more meat on them to compensate. The high deck issue came into play when racers started using the 354 heads on 392 blocks, but the intakes could still be used with a spacer. Stock Chrysler intakes swap across the board, the only exception being the wet intakes.

On the 354 & '55 331 the water pump bolted to the front of the heads, the 392 has the crossover.

  8. Only in certain cases. I've got a pair of 354's with pumps that bolt to the block and the separate water crossover.

Ah yes! I stand corrected!! I've been so fixated on head swaps lately that I forgot that there are stock motors out there! DOH! Sorry about that! Correct-a mundo! Just water flow differences.

All the Chr intakes will bolt on any Chr. Hemi. You can put most dry intakes on the engines w/o the front openings by drilling the intakes for fittings where the water holes are in the intake flange on the head. Some have a different crossover under the carb, most are square, some tall & narrow. the 51-3s have small runners. In the "Idle minds Dept."....You could put a '54 wet intake on an engine with the 392 crossover & run two upper radiator hoses to a custom radiator...

Hello...If the intake is a cast aluminum, not log type, won't fit the 392..If it is a log type (2 pieces) it will fit..Make up the difference with the rubber cross over tubes..Flange pattern is the same on all three engines..

    Why not?

  13. That's true only if you have 392 heads on a 354/331.

    Exactly!!:D

  15. If this intake is for a '51 to '54 331 it will have some means to get coolent out of the heads, and possably a thermostat housing. The '51 to '54 did not have a external water crossover like the '55 to '58 had, it was cast into the intake.

Here's another 331 manifold question. I've shown this manifold to a few people and they havent seen it before. Is it just a stock 331 mani or something else. The water crossover looks different?
    It's on a early 331 exyended bell #1323329-2

    The manifold # 1637625-2

    Valley # c53-8-12583

Just curious if anyone knows something about it.

That old Horne is a nice piece , it even has the hose spuds for the upper hoses, used on 51-54 . Cragar made one pretty close to it but the spuds weren't drilled . In looking at the picture of that long bell 331 with a strange water neck , I believe it's a later 4 bbl. intake with hoses adapted , not a '54 model because the water passage was cast in the intake and it was the first year for a 4bbl.

Hell, I'd ask after 20 years if there was even a sniff of a chance to pick up a Horne four-in-a-row for an early hemi!
