I want to purchase some pie crust slicks from Towel City. I would like to some see pictures of cars with 15x10x29.5 and 15x9x28.5 to help in my decision. Thanks, Church Key
Oddly enough, I wrestled with the same decision. Try to avoid my process as it cost me a few dollars to change horses mid stream. Old build pic, the tires are 9" x 28.5 on 16 " wheels. I thought they were a little short so I sold them. These are the new tires, 16 x 10 x 30. They fill the wells and look, well....meaner. I would have gone for the 9" wide if they had a 30" tall choice but these will do and ride nice.
You get exactly what my dilemma is...I would love a 9x30. I want a nine, but do not want a tire that is too short.. I am leaning towards the 10x30.
Just out of curiosity, have you 'tested' those tires on wet pavement? I see some grooves have been cut into the tires, but do they work at all?
I have been stuck out in the wet stuff a couple of times with them. No problems at all. That said I do wish I had taken a piss before I climbed in and tried to beat that cloud home. It was like driving on ice the entire way. Manageable but nerve racking and soggy at times. I've mentioned before they need to invent a product like snow chains but for slicks in the rain. Perhaps a rubber condom with sipes and grooves just for such occasions.
I wonder if a more aggressive siping/grooving would be the answer. I love the looks of pie crusts, but occasionally-soggy Washington just means you will get caught once in a while...
I got an idea that they work just like the grooves cut into them when we were young Steve. They make them street legal. They used to sell a smoothy slick that they would groove like a dirt track tire. One of my buddies run 'em and he said they cleaned pretty good. Still not like a street tire but pretty good.
I've driven my Austin on the freeway at 65 mph in fairly heavy rain and no issues. Of course they wont hook up like regular street tires if I stuff my foot in it on wet pavement, but not much does on wet pavement. I haven't tried panic stops in the rain, but normal stops work fine and no issues stopping easily.
Freaking beautiful car, man. I see yours has all the extra grooves cut in it. How do they work in wet as opposed to the shoulder grooves? Looking to get a pair for my Monte, but am mostly in it for the pie crust look and the big meats, I'd prefer to have pretty decent tread for wet and dry. Outside of that, anyone know where to find pie crust style tires with good driving tread as opposed to true cheater slicks?
True unfortunately. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/sad-news-alfin32.1289996/#post-14830541
Yea. What's not to like. I have some Radirs, and M&H racemasters. the M&H work best on the track, true slick. Not on the street. Rain can make for a white knuckle unpredictable ride. sk me how I know!
