Technical ***January 2023 Banger Meet Thread Another trip around the sun***

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jiminy, Jan 2, 2023.

  1. I too have run into troubles with the keys and dampeners/pulleys/etc.
I no longer run stock soft keys, I get alloy version from McMaster and double check for proper assembly.
Of course this is much easier if you do it before putting the front cover plate on.

Any thoughts on the pitting and, I’m guessing crack repairs?
    Big deal? Or not really?

No plan other than to run this engine as is hopefully.
Looks like it was rebuilt at about 1000 or so miles ago(per the previous owner)
It has a counter balanced crank. Everything else looks in order.
It was running six months ago before it was pulled for a small block.

I’m not looking to use this for touring, but wanted to put a nice head/carb/ignition and cruise this thing around.

Would you say this thing is “good to go”? ‘I just don’t have any experience with flathead crack repair/pitting.

I'm not the most qualified to comment here but thought it would help to have the background story.

I would suggest that if it's a runner then bang on those parts & enjoy it.
I would also suggest that I wouldn't spend any real money on that block as there are much better ones out there...
C/W crank is a real bonus.

Made a few changes, oddly all banger related, just slightly smaller displacement and extra traction application devices. Over Covid I bought a pile of a CJ2A as a play structure for my son (cheaper than some wood and plastic contraption), and it was a hit. Then I decided to start working on it, last May when I was relocated from HTX to Tucson and significantly reduced garaging opportunities. Progress has been slow. The other day a friend called and he needed to part ways with his 2A, so...at the end of the month, I'll drive out to beautiful Portales, NM and pick up a complete and operational CJ2A. The second upshot was that I sold mine, emptied 2/3rds of the garage and started organizing. My better half was so proud...little does she know there is a speedster inbound once the snows pass

  7. Walls,
Yes, pinning it an acceptable and preferred to welding to repair the blocks.
The big IF is it must be done correctly and you have to stage the process.
For instance, if the crack runs under a valve seat, you must replace the seat first and then pin, other wise the new seat can loosen the pins.
But, I see more then just the pins, which look decent to me. The two head studs around #4 have helicoils and those will be a source of water leakage. Some of the old Permatex snot or other non hardening sealers must be used here to seal them up.
As for the bore, with that much water, I would suspect the rings to be rusted into the piston and stuck.
Take the pistons out and carefully loosen the rings, then decide if they need replacement.

You should be fine up to about 75-80 HP, any more than that start looking for another block.

The crack pins and valve seats appear to have many successful miles on em… and so does the bore! Wouldn’t bother me for a stocker or moderate hop up

    Looking forward to it!

A yarn about your buck in a banger would be fun too! ;)

Also out of interest, can someone tell me what the standard Model A Cam profile is? IE lift/timing
I have a reground cam here but don't know what it's performance potential is.
I expect there isn't much room for changing valve timing with a re-grind cam?

When I get home, I can share what Dema did to the A cam that is going in my T. (It arrived!)

as to valve timing changes, what are you thinking?

  13. Do a search for Brierley’s cam shafts in previous months
    It gives duration and lift

    Thanks,
I am just trying to get a gauge of what this cam might be good for.

3/4 Race is what I was told... not sure which 3 cylinders though!

Found this little guy. Don't have much garage space, and not like it will do huge lifting. Will be nice to make bungs, plugs, odd bits, and so on. There is a 3 jaw chuck still available, so that will be inbound soon.

Lots of little jobs can be accomplished with that machine. Need patience for making .010 or .020 cuts. But after all, you're probably not building a space shuttle on competitive bids. Good score.

  21. Side driven water pumps… what do you guys know about them?

From what I know so far, Frontenac and Ambler made them A2070983-469A-42C9-9FC5-DEB99EA15442.jpeg

@Retson the Racer that style of water pump was used on quite a few cars the Stutz among them. No doubt guys adapted some from other cars as they adapted the dual distributors you could also find on some Stutz cars.

I haven't measured it properly yet but I know it has .325 lift on both.
I was going to put a timing disc on it & plot it with a dial indicator. The card says .090 @ tdc In.

Those are killer!! Do you have a radius turning attachment for the steel bit with balls? How do the ball ends pop in to the brass and stay snug and swively? Fantastic work man.

Checking in, got the new finned cover from Retson. Did it up black and wiped the fins off to match the valve cover.
I think it cleaned up the look alot.

I haven't gotten too far yet. It has .325 lift on both.
I was going to use a deg wheel & dial indicator to plot it. Says on card .090 @ TDC inlet

Looks like the repairs were done ok, I would tend to agree with others, run it and dont throw a ton of money at it but you can make some decent power with it without issue if its all good.
