I'm trying to imagine what this looks like, but my brain wont let me. Its like some kind of built in defence mechanism.

Fenders were such an integral part of the 1940's designs....I think removing the fenders leaves the cars lacking the visual appeal which makes the cars so well received in the first place. I personally don't see much point in 'creating' a 1940's car 'without fenders', because the fenders more often than not...''MADE THE CAR'' what it was....they don't look 'finished' and everyone would question the point and reasoning.

Now if they were racers....that's a different story!

That said...I know everyone has their own opinion of course...but if a car was manufactured in 1940-1949 ...I would quickly ask ''what happened to the fenders???" & probably ask it again after I walked around the car a second time!o_O

Well, it's technically not from the '40s, and technically not completely fenderless, and technically not even a real car, but I always kinda liked this one!

No, no, Hell no! Fat fenders are what makes a 40's car look sexy.

Exactly zero of the cars posted look better without fenders than if they had them. I would dare say that even some 80's hack-fuckery with quad square headlights would be better, and we all know that is awful.
Just my thoughts. You are entitled to your (wrong) opinion...

  14. And what's even funnier (some would say typical) is that none of the cars pictured are actually 40's cars!
(One '40 Ford, but we know that's a carryover 30's body )

Why not close the thread? You like bashing people for building what they want and not what you want.
You people need to learn internet etiquette.
I was taught to respect people. Old time values. I know most people complaining are older than me.
    They still need to mature.

  20. "Southern Dirt Track" theme is about the only way I'd have a fenderless hot rod. And, yes, I know this is not a '40's car...

Most post WWII cars look hideous as fenderless, mainly because the hoods got wider, and just don't have the pointed nose to the hood/grille area. It takes a lot of modification to make them look halfway decent, and few have pulled this off well. That's why guys are posting 30's cars and saying they know they're not 40's.

Really had to think to come up with a suitable car. Stewart Woollard's Anglia comes close but the problem of fitting in a chubby body inside still persists. Scan-230112-0001.jpg

Post #78 by Anthony shows (to me) the best fenderless 40+ car so far. It looks good. I would be proud if it was mine.
That said, it would still look better (to me) if it had fenders. I doubt I would think of trading my sedan for that.
I was not bashing anyone, but sharing my opinion of what is correct. My opinion is worth what you paid for it. This thread has turned into a bunch of opinions, and I gave mine.
I still stand by my thoughts that nobody has posted a 40+ car that looks better without fenders. I don't think it's possible.
If this place was about building what you want, and re-writing history, then I guess what you said may hold water. But there is no etiquette lesson here. The question was asked, it was answered, and the fact is that nobody has produced a car (especially traditional) that is an improved look without fenders. No matter how much you want it to be different.
Vintage stock cars were built for purpose, not looks, so there is that, too.

But wheels, lack of rake are all wrong:

  29. This car is interesting. Agree it needs some rake and different wheels/tires. But what really kills the look is the 32 grille shell. It needs something that matches the body more, ID's it as a Chevy. IMO

I agree. Perhaps a '34 Chevy shell with the bottom end simplified a bit?
