Hot Rods Car collection flooded, N.California

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by J.Fishbeck, Jan 10, 2023.

  1. Going thru my current junk mail folder, with this video and no description of any kind. Other than northern California being the location, there wasn't any other information.

    What a bummer..

One of the other videos under this profile shows cruising CA Highway 1, in Santa Barbara.

They just got smacked hard in this series of storms.

Those not here, don't get hooked up on the term "Northern California".

A whole lot of folks seem to think that Northern California begins at the Southern city limits of Bakersfield, which is a little less than 1/3rd of the distance between the North and South borders of California.

We got it pretty good this morning, cell and radio alerts for a tornado, etc. hit us a bit before 4 am for about 20 minutes, power came back about 6 am.
Seems we didn’t get hit nearly as hard as others.

My son is in San Juan Bautista, inland a bit from Monterey. A dry wash creek nearby to them now has 18 ft of water in it. A levy broke and flooded hundreds of acres of farm and ranch land. More rain is perdicted 6 of the next 8 days.
    Prayers to all.

Is this in a basement? If the floor here is at ground level, how does an area get that flooded? It looks incredibly deep.

That has to be rough. Granted, I don't think anything there will end up being a total loss, but it's going to take a lot of time to undo the damages.

There is no need for a property, or a floor level of a building to be in a low-lying area.

All that is necessary for transient flooding to happen is that the drainage systems that are hydrologically linked to the area not be of sufficient capacity, or get too clogged with debris, and the water will get backed up before it can get out.

You can be on visible high ground, knees deep in water. I just did that, to go clear a storm drain.

This will get worse. If not this year, over time.

Most of these levies are made of just dirt, and were built by farmers a century ago, to protect farm land.

The trouble is, that is not just what is behind them now.

A friend of mine is the Technical and Policy Advisor at California Department of Water Resources.

He says: "It would be cheaper to buy thousands of the most expensive Mercedes Benzs, crush them, stack them, and cover them in concrete, than any other way of durably rebuilding these."

Oh man, what a bummer. Nowhere near as bad as the fires though, the cars can be dried out and fixed.
I'm sure glad we are up on a bluff, all this rain and (knock on wood) just a little seepage under the big door for me. The wind has been hell on the tarps though.

  18. Wow, thats awful. But if it were mine, I would be thinking at least its better than being in the middle of one of those huge fires that completely destroys everything. A flooded car can be fixed.

Unfortunately, California has never been known for its wise and visionary water resource decisions.

That almost looks like part of the Justice Bros. Museum in Duarte CA. Has anyone confirmed the location?

Heartbreaking to watch. I think I'd have a heart attack if I walked down the steps and saw that. Can only pray they have sufficient insurance.
