    John,
Is that a ring gear "snubber" on the axle housing? Does that center section not have a pinion shaft support bearing?.

    The assembly looks great.

    Slow progress.

  8. Hey Dan,

This is a 201 Halibrand (V8) with the straddle mount bearing and yes that is a snubber.
Since these are '35 housings with the smaller bearing the snubber will take some of the load if I get too frisky with it.

Can't wait to get it in and finish the new motor.

    Happy New Year All, J

    Dan,
    Looking good...
I'm back into mine after about 2700 miles (serial #140) the rear main started leaking. I had used a 'Detroit Diesel' silicone seal, not removing the lip spring like the assembly guide recommends... bad idea in my mind.
The seal was leaking at the bottom of the main cap, between the seal and the cap surface. On close inspection you could see where the cutting tool had made an ever so slight impression in the finish cut...I missed it on the initial assembly. It was at 6:00, right at the 'bottom' of the cap. I also did not use any sealant on the seal as I assembled it, as it has the factory coating to do that. I have re-installed a new seal and placed Loctite 5699 sealant on the backside of the seal, and drove it all the way into the back of the bore to form a seal against those surfaces.
I had torn down the engine entirely and the only thing that I noticed was that the main bearing shells were showing copper from wear thru at the tabs....I had critically looked at these on initial assembly and had cleaned them up...but I guess, not aggressively enough. The remainder of the bearing surfaces looked good enough I reused them as is.
You may or may not have the same situation with your engine, but it's a bitch to be pulling it right away for a rear main leak out of a "modern" seal.
    Good luck

Checking in for the new year
    Advice
I ran one previously with a new aluminum head and new radiator. It never overheated without a fan. Wasn’t really a parade car though.
The guy who wrote this article sent it to me a while back. I don’t remember if he posts on here or not.
If you want to run a fan, could be worse options.

I have a V8 pump for my recently acquired B engine.
I plan to use it considering I need a pump and the new leakless model A ones have been out of stock for a long time now.
we’ll see how it goes on my 2nd try.
I’m a long way from running this engine though..

    I'm here nothing to report.

  14. I’m still here, still accumulating parts for a single seater but no actual progress as our house is on the market and the new hip is still a bit green.

Had my town sedan out for 10 days over my Christmas break, I've recently changed from a Stromberg 97 to a late larger 94 from a 272 yblock, I'm quite happy with the results, seems to be better on juice and it's low/part throttle response is way better i don't think it has made any difference power wise though 20221228_171157.jpg

IMG_20221227_093928385.jpg another finding from the tear down on the Burtz engine. The crank snout is just about .006 longer than the length of the front pulley so it doesn't seat tight against the crank timing gear. It was loose, front to back, in addition to being a loose fit in diameter. Repop parts on repop parts. Looks like I need to re look at the crank key size too....
