The way I remember it is this- originally a Japanese gentleman whose last name began with M operated M&V Automotive and Paul Horning worked there. Paul and his boss ran the original Rice Bowl Special ‘27 T Altered in the early ‘60’s and Gray may have had something to do with this car. The team even won their class at the 1963 Indy Nationals.
Eventually the car was parted out with the engine going into a Bantam Altered which was named Rice Bowl Special II. Horning died in an accident and his ‘32 Roadster went to his boss, Mr. M (I wish I could recall his name) who in turn gave the Deuce to Gray.
It must have been in the ‘90’s (?) when some of the heavy hitters in the industry built a clone of the original RB Special and presented it to Gray. The car pictured is the Rice Bowl Special III.
I should look through some back issues, those that did this for Gray deserve to have their names remembered.

Here’s the original car running at IRP in 1963, they took their class with a 10.92 at 128 mph. The photo ran in the Hot Rod Yearbook No. 3

That's the copy that the Pete & Jakes gang built, gathering parts from friends, that was given to Gray at the '86 Nostalgia Nationals at Fremont. It was quite the surprise, as Art Chrisman had it hidden in the Ford Motor Concept Truck. The remains of the original are here in Portland. IMG_9793.JPG
