This is how you get a survivor back on the road.

  3. I'm enjoying your build. Just found this thread yesterday. Something I need to do some day. I posted a pic of some diamond design that I bought @ Home Depot for the rocker kick panel. I thought that you might get some ideas for your build. They also have some plaster wire mesh that I used on my 95 V off topic car. Covered the fresh air intake in the front valance & backside of the fenders.

    More progress!

I believe this is the first time the car has driven since the late 60’s!

Wow, thank you for your support Ryan! I must be doing something right if the boss man approves!

Thanks! Yes, hopefully you’ll see it out! I hope to make some of the hot rod shows next summer!

That is a cool idea! Thank you for showing the pic, I have thought about a kick panel there. I’m thinking of adding carpet at some point, but haven’t gotten that far yet!

Thank you Glenn! It certainly does have character, and I’m sure it’ll turn some heads! Not everyone is in to the wild 60’s stuff, but I love it!

Yes I hope so! I’m not too sure if I’ll take it up the hill… This thing was more built for the streets of Connecticut than the side of a mountain!

Haha yes you’ve caught me! I was working on a foam pattern for a radiator… I’ve given up trying to chop or modify 80+ year old radiators, and have decided to order a custom core instead. At least I’ll be starting with something good then!

Thanks Jon! You missed rides later on

Look ma, no more blocks under the grille!

A little under a year and half after acquiring this coupe, I finally got to drive it down the road.

I decided the other day that I’d waited long enough to drive it, so I told myself I’d get it going for the last local Cars and Coffee event at the WFK Ice House museum in New London, NH.

I ended up working all night Friday, no sleep, but damn it I did make it!

Overall it goes down the road pretty well, but I’m fighting clutch slipping, and it’s a little difficult to get into 2nd gear. I think the clutch may have gotten grease on it from the throwout bearing somehow? Hoping I don’t have to pull engine and replace the clutch disc!

    Nice!

Try hosing the clutch out with a couple of cans of brake clean?

Car looks killer. And that grill is perfect. Great job updating and preserving. It's a fine line and you did great.

Car looks great! Clutch not so much. You can try hosing it off with brake clean but I think replacement may be in order.

Lots of reasons for clutch slippage. If you just reached in the clutch housing itself and wiped your fingers on the inside, not really a valid test IMO. My clutch housing gets loaded with stuff and will make your fingers black for days, and the clutch itself is dry. It could just be worn quite a bit and a weak pressure plate too. Some oily residue can be off the rear main and just get whipped around in there, but not necessarily make it to the clutch surface itself.

Either way, great job on getting it back on the road. I would personally be putting a new clutch for piece of mind in it over the winter.....and checking that the rear main isn't leaking.

Been doing a bunch of trouble shooting, and @rust came over and checked it out. After trying about everything in the book, it seems the pressure plate just isn’t up to the task. It was a used Flathead one I had kicking around, so I’m not entirely sure of the history. The new pressure plate I bought from Mac’s didn’t fit worth a shit. The bolt holes were 3/8 instead of the standard 5/16, and the release fingers were much higher and messed up everything when assembling.

I’ve ordered a new Ram street/strip pressure plate. I guess a stock Flathead pressure plate designed for 110 HP and skinny tires isn’t quite up to 350+ HP in a 2,000 pound car, with 13” wide tires… and Posi

So I managed to fix the clutch slipping issue. New Ram street/strip pressure plate took care of that. I found two stray springs when taking out the trans. I believe they were wedged into the pressure plate, leaving it partly engaged when it was assembled and making everything seem kosher. The problem occurred when the springs fell out, the pressure plate was able to disengage fully and ran into the throwout bearing.

I missed out cruising this thing around at Pinetree Jamboree, but my back-up goal was the Jalopy Hillclimb held in Campton NH. After some late night fiddling until 3AM, I got things squared away to where I felt comfortable driving a reasonable distance. The hard work paid off, and the car performed quite well all day, no real hiccups! I missed a turn on the way back and ended up going the LONG way home, but I added over 150 miles to the odometer! The event was great, and I can’t thank Alan and Mark Johnston for putting on this event!

Yes it was quite the event! I wish I had a good video to show the road going up to the top… it was no joke! I only made two runs up, the second one a rock had come loose in the road and almost took out my grille! Probably 50 cars in total, and all of them were pretty cool.

Glad to see you got your juice clutch back in action. Looks like you have a classic “Roy” key fob on her..that ought to be good for at least a extra 5 horsepower! LOL He has been a buddy of mine for a whole lot of years; hope he is doing well!

Another 100 miles cruise today, up to Dorchester NH to take a little (132 pound) load of scrap copper to the junkie and then on to visit the legend himself Howard Towne. Headed up the road from his place and snapped a couple pics…. And then opened it up a little on the way home!
