Customs Has anyone 3 window swapped a 40 ford coupe. Not just filled quarter windows.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hitchhiker, Oct 9, 2022.

  1. Like the title says, has anyone 3 window swapped a 40 Ford coupe? Not just filled the quarter windows, but changed the roof line? Think 36 3 window roof on a 40 ford....maybe even lengthen the doors?

Earl Bruce coupe nick named “the armoured car” you can see why.It may be historic but that doesn't make it nice. It needs what @Hitchhiker mentions.

I would like to think I have seen it done, but I am not sure. Seems like it would look alot like a willys.

  7. Several have tried. I haven't seen one that was an improvement. I think the dark blue one above is about the best. The others are all pretty much deformed.

There was a glass 37 three window made at some point. Might be worth looking Up for a point of reference

  10. Interesting idea Hitchhiker.. That said, those fibreglass '37 three windows missed the mark in my opinion as the window opening and roofline were distorted somehow - much like the primer example 40Vert showed. I agree that the blue example looks much better. This conversion really requires an exact replica (or transplant) of Ford's '36 three window. It's proportions are spot on.

As I said, interesting idea and I bet the fellows on the Photoshop thread would jump on this one. ..Maybe a slight chop as well?

  11. There have also been multiple photoshop versions over the years too. That glass one was hideous. Wasn't that supposed to be a 37?

  12. Not a '40, but here's how it should be done:

Many have tried, many have failed.

  15. That's a tough one to pull off but the 39 above looks to have pulled it off from the angle of the photo.

  16. Hitchhiker, do you have a 40 Coupe your thinking of cutting up?

Ive kicked the idea around for years. I think the ticket is to use 2 door sedan doors on a coupe with the b pillar moved back. Door tops of course would need extensive work.

  19. It may be easier to accomplish by putting a '40 front end on a '36 3 window, if someone feels the need.
I'm like most, love the '40 Ford for its overall look, which includes the roofline (except for the '40 Convertibles, my top will always be down).

  23. the 38 has a different roof shape to the 39/40 in the crown to deck transition, so is easier to pull off. While a couple are pretty good efforts I still haven't seen a 39/40 that would make me want it more than a stock version.

I dunno. Why mess with perfection? If Henry thought a three window 39-40 looked good, he would have built one…

Not exactly the same but "Dutch" Comstock from Herkimer NY did a 46ish Ford coupe into a 3 window. The guy was on here must have been 4 years ago. Car looked good, Dutch did quite a job.
