my friend has a '37 chevy coupe gasser. my understanding is, it was built in the '60's and in some magazines. he showed me those so it was true. he is 83 years old and can't get under cars anymore. the problem is, the box is worn out. anybody know what the box could be replaced with. i was thinking some kind of small power box might work for him. if not where could you get a rebuilt one or new one. thanks
yea i know you want pics but he lives an hour away and i don't use them cell phones. if i get this starter problem fixed in my truck i am going to go get it and do the work.

  2. Try to find a box and column out of a '64-'69 Dodge A-100 van/pickup. Side steer like the old Chevy. Made by Saginaw division of GM. Not power but it steers light and easy. Has turn signal switch built in.

If your going to buy one by all means call Lee out in California. I've been dealing with them for the last 20 years and they really have their blueprinting down pat! I've been using there 800 Series Saginaw. They start with a new Saginaw box and do their magic to all the parts.
I have there 14:1 with a 30-pound torsion bar in my 69 el Camino. It gives excellent feedback and feels like a fast ratio manual box in a very light hot rod or go cart but is very easy to park.

I am using a 1983 toyota 2 wheel drive pick up power steering box in my 34 chev pick up . ,small and compact and side steer as well the steering are is nearly the same as the original ,the Toyota steering arm actually still use the cup and ball tie rod end . Will use the pump as well ,small and remote fill . 20220925_145359.jpg 20220925_145411.jpg

Gary, boxes from $236, pumps from $72 at RockAuto. Toyota trucks have a cult following. They are not hard to find parts for. Mike

thanks again for the replies. my friend don has plenty of money. i don't know how with all the cars he has. so i don't think a new box and pump is out of the question. i also don't know how the "no foreign parts on my car" goes with him. you know how us old dudes are stuck in our ways.

Check Valpy's old yard in Mojave and Turner's in Fresno. One of them should have what you want .

If you're looking for an original '37 steering box, take note there were 2 different boxes used in 1937 - one for the Master model and a different one for the Master-Deluxe model.

  12. another good way to go is use a 525 GM box, manual steering off of any mid 60's-70's car, and use Speedway steering arms, tie rod, etc.
did this on my 37 and steered real easy...made my own bolt-on steering box mount...

Then I guess Vega boxes shouldn't either, since they're too new for the HAMB. Or any other boxes newer than what some consider traditional?
