What company is it from? And call them up to redeem the free gift! See what happens.

Now for the big question will it crank? Will it start? Is the carb free? Did the carbs free up on the other Vair? Are they both runners now? Is the Easter Bunny real?

  9. honestly, this one doesnt seem to be too far from starting, needs an oil change something horrible, points sanding, carb needs dunked in diesel for a couple hours to clean out the mud dobber nest that decided to manifest on the choke plate, luckily nothing inside seemingly, need to see if the turbo spins... and the cylinders all need a little atf.

by the way, how do i get the ignition switch out? i cant get the cylinder to come out because it gets stuck on the trim outside. no clue how to take it off and i dont want to force it.

  10. another part of this, that might make sense, fords were likely harder to flip if you stole one and swapped the vin, but a chevy? might be easy enough to get them and swap them and flip them. as chevy vin plates werent as big and could possibly be swapped easier. my '57s vin is huge, and contains everything about the car.

Clark's Corvair started formally around '73 I believe.

This is where things are going to start to suck. They don’t just come apart all nice and neat without a key. You may have to sacrifice some parts to the ignition gods. You will need a new ignition switch, keyed lock cylinder with keys and lock cylinder bezel. I just took a small Dremmel cut off wheel and cut the bezel 180 degrees apart then split it with a hammer and small chisel. Then push the switch through the dash and pull down from underneath and unplug. Don’t forget before you try to start it to get oil to the turbo first. You don’t want it running dry.
Now is the Easter Bunny real?

  13. Can i bypass the switch entirely with removing the wiring? Or does that also require removing the switch.

Yes, just unplug the switch in the dash and plug it into a new switch. You are going to want to replace the switch in the tan one anyway. It is probably corroded from sitting. And they weren’t all that expensive from NAPA.

  15. i stuck a battery on it... worked as intended, havent tried the start position yet, but the oil and fan light turned on.

  16. Also, im just gonna make a starter button and an ignition switch. Like what race cars use.

  17. Finally got the titles transferred, so much paperwork... who knew you need parents permission to title something when youre a minor?

I do. But then again I watched Judge Judy back in the day. ;). See, a minor can not enter into a legal binding contract. Well, unless you promise your folks you be home at 10, roll in at midnight and get grounded. :)

  19. My dad remembers doing his titles without needing a notarized permission slip.

Then again, he was a minor 33 years ago

Oh yes, when I was 15 my mom took me to the DMV and I had my Bultaco put in my name and got on road plate for it.
Let’s see, no lights, tuned nasty exhaust behind a smoky two stroke motor. You wannna pay 19 bucks kid? Sure, we’ll take your money;)
Still have the plate with the year sticker in the garage.
    Times and laws have changed.

Edit: One thing to note, I’d bought the bike a year or two earlier, I’d saved birthday money, etc and had a pile of cash…60 bucks. When my dad took me to look at it and the guy was writing a BOS for it, my dad said “no, his money, his name”. So in July of that year, my mom took me to the DMV for a MC license (could get one after drivers Ed at 15 -1/2 at the time if you had a learners permit as I recall). So my plan was to ride the bike to school as a junior in HS when classes started.
Now this was at a time you could call a DMV directly, and not an 800 number, but to get it titled all I had to do was get a stencil of the engine number and bring it with me.
I mentioned my mom took me down to the DMV, but she never came inside. I went in with my learners permit, school ID and the BOS in my name and the engine number.
All paperwork was in order via DMV, a few weeks later the title an plate showed up (title in my name before I was 16 even).
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to back up “times and laws have changed”;)

  22. Im guessing like my dad, there were too many kids coming home with rotten old cars? He got a '61 scout for like 30 bucks when he was 15 and he had it titled and everything. Never did make it out of the yard, sadly rot took it away before it hit the road.

It’s not just vehicles, it’s things like gym memberships, etc. not trying to be a legalese, but a minor cannot enter into a legal binding contract (as I understand it).

Fishing line works better and cheaper for headliners.
