History Ute ought to want one...

It takes time, but there are some great photos available. justabeater37 - thanks. There is some strange appeal in pictures of vehicles in this condition. I don't know if it's imagining what it was once like, just seeing what it's like now or the prospect of what it could be; perhaps all three combined. The rarity of something like your ute must add to the appeal.

 

It is one of 267 Wellside roadster Utes built in 1936 near as I can find. Not necessarily valuable near as I can tell either. It will definitely make for a unique mild custom. I have affectionately dubbed it the Zoot Ute. A higher end working man's mode of transportation...

 

Right hand drive in Iowa? Was that imported from Australia?

 

Sometime in its life. I bought it out of eastern Nebraska. No idea where its travels were before then for sure. I think it was on the west coast someplace and brought to Nebraska years before I got it.

 

Forgot words..... my 33, homemade, but in my mind still a Ute.

 

It looks very much like a ute to me; it looks great.

That is one impeccably dressed shooting party.

Hunting animals from the back of a ute is a traditional Aussie craft. In rural areas the alternative Shooting Landau body style is often seen. The Shooting Landau is a custom affair fabricated from the more common sedan or station sedan body variant. The roof is removed in a meticulously craftsman-like manner (grinder or gas axe) and appropriate luminaires are added to the pillars. Many generations of Australian children have learnt meticulous driving skills behind the wheel of such unique marques.

You got that right Harv, but all joking aside there are plenty of stories over the years of rare European Vintage, Veteran and Edwardian cars or remains that were found in the outback. Eventually they find their way back to the big collectors and dealers in Britain or Europe.

And only beer in longnecks! While we were having a Hot rod show at the local RSL, an old Digger came up and said that "the Chev's were the best shooting cars, not like that old Ford shit!!"

'Bogged three miles out of Walgett on the Brewarrina Road' - State Library of New South Wales (the more pics of Chev utes I see, the more I like them) (In The Advertiser newspaper (Adelaide) in the 1930s, Ford was advertising a quick [one day?] turn around for an exchange V8 engine to be fitted and in the same newspaper there were ads for Chev utes/trucks boasting that their engines never needed replacing ... )

Mate , your making it easy now . Profile in the door and bonnet/hood vent and hubcap/wheel make it a Ford Popular /Anglia/Prefect type. Probably not a Prefect as that had a pronounced vertical grille .

 

It can't be that easy ... you are kind of close but you haven't said what it is. (I have no idea what the sedan in the middle is; is it a Morris Oxford on the right? a Hillman on the extreme left?)

EDIT: if you are watching the thread "We love sedan deliveries" I have virtually said what the ute is, a 1937-38 Ford "Ten" (or 7W) roadster utility. There were three models in Ford Australia's "Ten" commercial range for 1937-38: the roadster utility, a coupe utility and a panel van. There are believed to be about four surviving roadster utes (one in the US, I think); I am not sure how many coupe utes survive but there are no known surviving panel vans.

 

Not Sure if I need the table saw and glue or a grinder and welder. This thing has more wood than steel in it. Hope I remember how it all goes back together...
