The ute on the jack: yes, I am pretty sure it's not a Ford. The ute on the jack looks like it has a spare wheel space (?) under the tailgate, and the driver's door looks like a suicide door, rear hinged. Just about every manufacturer/importer in Oz back then must have had a ute in their range. Not long ago I found a 1930s advert in The Advertiser (Adelaide) for a DKW two-stroke ute. (Someone then mentioned the Lightburn (Zeta?) two-stroke ute from a couple of decades later.)

  6. Regarding the ute on the jack , don,t forget the Standard Motor Company. Heres a Flying 9 . ( later Vanguard ) My first thought was a Flying 8 or 9 from the mid '30s. I,ve had both as sedans. The little 2 door Flying 8 slantback with suicide doors was a cute car. Actually most British utes of that period were pretty much the same. ( roadster or coupe ute ) Armstrong Siddley ute was bigger so forget that one.

  7. Forgot to enlarge the mystery ute  which actually has a small/fine flared valance panel between front and rear fender similar to the Standard Flying 9 coupe ute. Then again, so does the blue Morris roadster ute. Mystery ute has wider rear fenders but that could just be a year or two difference.

It's a 1936 Ford V8. If you read the very first post in this thread there are a few small images to click on and one of them shows the four models in Ford Australia's V8 ute range for 1936. Basically, there was a Coupe Utility and a Roadster Utility.

From the photoshop thread. I asked what if Lincoln made a ute?. I have a 36 Ford wellside roadster ute that will be making its way in to the shop by next spring and was looking for inspiration on classing it up a bit. [IMG]

I was interested to see the pics of your ute a while ago. Can you put a pic of it in this thread (in its 'as found' condition)?

This ute is possibly a 1955 Austin A40. Only a partial view of the ute but it has great sign writing and an automotive setting. B-13941.jpeg Photo taken Oct 1957, Hyde St, Adelaide. State Library of South Australia B13941

  24. As a side note:

The sign on the ute above reminded me of something.
'Ute' is short for Utility Vehicle. In some parts of the country in the old days, the short form 'tily' was used as often as 'ute.' As it turns out, 'ute' has proved to have more staying power. 'Tily' has all but vanished. Many would say they've never even heard it.

  26. Just an interesting note, Holden made Chevrolet branded Utes up until 1952. In 1953 they switched to making Holden branded Utes, which are a different than the Chevrolet. Not just a rebranded Chevrolet, but a whole new Holden designed vehicle.

My 52 Chevy Ute uses the same parts from B-pillar forward as a 4 door sedan. The Ute unique parts are roof and B-pillar rearward. My 52 Ute has a 49 style dash, my understanding is all 49-52 Utes have the 49 style dash.

There must be some shared DNA in the design of the rear 'mudguards' on the Chev ute and the Holden sedan in the above photo.
