For those who desire a little more rubber on the rear than a 4" hoop will (or should) allow, these can be re-hooped to 6-1/2".

The hoop is late 1990's to early 2000's Chrysler mini van 16" steel wheels. They can be had for cheap. You get double safety beads in the process, too. You can run tubeless after that. 213236952_4393970983969149_8673671701075015215_n.jpg

Once you have the parts, the rest is mostly time and patience (and maybe a dial indicator).

If this tool-using monkey can do it, so can you.

Had to look up where Edison was - very nice area. Been to Anacortes & San Juans many times, but didn’t know about Edison.

  8. In the 50's in So Cal, everyone got rid of wide five wheels as soon as possible, they were considerd "Old and ugly suited only for circle racers". Now its a big deal but it doesn't represent how it really was back then, only the way you thought it was.

  9. Luckily this thread is dedicated to a set of wheels, and not a decade of Hot Rodding.

If you want the outer hoops, they come from the base model Chrysler minivan, with 16-inch wheels. The source is a salvage yard.

As for the wheel building, that's up to you to do, or to pay some to do for you.

So Cal is was not the whole country, just one part of one state.

There are plenty of pictures showing Wide-5 wheels from that era.

Sure, they might not represent So Cal car culture from that era, but not everyone here cares about building a period-correct So Cal hot rod.

The 9N runs 'em on the front...but a different bolt pattern.

  21. I see '36 vented front brakes, and possible rears. Mind enlightening us on how you did the juice conversion for the front?

A real ear full of headers for the pilot of that 44 car, but a real show piece, hope it survived

I always thought many of the cars from that era were just too nice to race, especially this one. I doubt the car survived, not many did. (Gene Kohr is the driver..he later drove sprinters in central PA)
