^^^^^ Looks to be Ray Harroun, winner of the first Indy 500. He was the first to use a rear view mirror. Most of the racers back then had a ride-along "mechanic" who, other than maybe keeping an eye on the gauges, their main job was as a spotter to let the driver know where other cars were around him.
I disagree. I treated mine a lot better than that as it was far from "just a car.". But then this was VT and may have been one of the Daryl brothers.
