Jigger, your high school project truly is a blast from the past. I remember
'64-'67 when mags were not a common thing and I'd see '57 Chevys with
rust colored primer, black steelies and narrow white walls, some with
baby Moons. As a high school freshman I became pals with juniors and
seniors who had that very type of tri-five. Sometimes I'd be riding shotgun,
other times I be jammed in the back seat with giant jocks / punks. These
days I seldom pay any attention to 100 point restos and faux gassers. Your
sketch gave me a pick up.

Good morning guys! This past weekend, we set up at the Michigan Antique Festival and did pretty well!

In between talking with customers, I scratched out a few pieces. The first was this little coupe. I'm working on getting better at my lettering. Definitely not my strong point. It's getting better though! Have a great weekend!

  10. Bob reminded me this weekend is Mothers Day so I thought I would re-post an old piece that might help some of you guys out. Using Roths "Mothers Worry" for inspiration, here's the perfect way to let Mom know how much you care !

  11. Absolutely love this shot. The pick up has just about every add on available.
    Thanks Bob,
    Later,
    Dick

  12. I feel the same way when I get to a car show. I can appreciate the work the goes into the high dollar car but I would rather see the cars that were built by the owner in his home garage.
    Later,
    Dick

"THE WEATHER IS IMPROVING, LET'S SEE SOME PHAETONS..." By @HOTRODPRIMER
    upload_2022-5-6_4-33-14.png

    Hello,
What a great title for a thread... sunny So Cal calls for cruising around in a Convertible or for the family, a Phaeton.

Having been a 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery owner in the teens and 20 something days, to appease my wife’s quest for a convertible, here is a combination Convertible/modified 4 door Sedan/Phaeton.

But, for the art project: Here is the lowered rake design without the top.

    upload_2022-5-6_4-32-52.png
She would have liked the idea of an open top for those sunny So Cal cruising around days to the beach or mountains. As long as it had enough power and of course, A/C. One thing she mentioned in our old conversations about convertibles and open roadster cruising. She did not necessarily like the blob of canvas sitting on the back trunk area. It just looked too much or someone just picked up a month’s worth of clothes/industrial washings and just threw them back there.
upload_2022-5-6_4-35-37.png She was instrumental in getting this action photo, as she was the primary driver in our El Camino. Since I was kneeling down and/or standing up in the bed with several cameras, coordination was the key. The timing of the Phaeton and the El Camino was perfect and the photo came out with the background slightly blurry. "Action in motion?"

The photo technique for hot rods in motion at the time, was to pan the camera from a stationary position as the hot rod moved by the photographer. That was the standard technique, but as practiced as possible, it was always a hit or miss photograph situation. So, we developed this "In the El Camino bed," moving action technique for clear photos and blurry backgrounds.
    upload_2022-5-6_4-42-56.png
When we took our multiple road trips to Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA area, she liked what she saw as an option to this jumbled mess sitting on the back of any Phaeton or convertible. That normal blob, in itself, was one thing that kept us from having a convertible in our arsenal of daily drivers, hot rod style or new.
    upload_2022-5-6_4-43-45.png
But when the the idea of a hand made custom top was created for a 1934 Ford Phaeton, the design suddenly took front and center. It was light enough for two people to clip it on and install/remove the California Top. So, it was not that much different than a manual fold top that just sat on the rear area.
But, a lot cleaner in design and function.

So, after the multiple visits and plenty of photos, the finished product was outstanding. It was a long photo process and we were happy to be there as it was created and eventually finished.

Thanks, BHK and your multi-color glasses... very cool.

In incorporating the California Top into the 1940 Ford design, here is a different version on the 4 door Phaeton with suicide doors.

For those that are into the “Rake” mode, for the more aggressive look…
    upload_2022-5-6_4-48-32.png
As sunny as coastal So Cal is, on at least 340 days, it does get cold and rainy at times. For those heater and enclosed days of road trips, the side panels fit right in place. They allow any water to drip down and away from the viewing windows.

Very kool. My first brush with Roth was the "Mothers Worry" sweatshirt I received
as a birthday present in '64. I can guarantee I was the only kid wearing a Roth shirt
in Phys Ed class in my small town high school.

  23. Yeah I'm surprised you didn't get sent home like the Beave ! It took me a while longer than you to score a Roth t-shirt and the Rat Fink membership card and certificate. I only wore it to school one time and got bombarded with guys trying to barter stuff for it.

  28. My mother's worry t-shirt and rat fink hat were what I remember as my 1st purchases. Mid 60's would be my guess on time. Thank you, everybody. :)
