Projects BENNETTS ‘Midnight Special’ speedster

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by jordabennett, Mar 3, 2022.

  1. Finally was able to get over to my mates (Karl’s from make it kustom)s shop and we got into shaping hammering rolling and much more, we were able to get the right side roughly mocked up for the grill and will continue getting it dialed and then start the other side!
Also managed to get this awesome (smaller) ww2 stainless oxygen tank that will fit perfect for my fuel tank and is much smaller than your standard size one.
ALSO. I managed to get a Mccollugh supercharger, it’s rebuilt and has been an item that I’ve been wanting since I was 14. It was never for sale until now. I’m not sure if it will be allowed for the race car but fingers crossed. Otherwise it will sit in the glass cabinet until the roadster is started.
If there’s anyone out there that knows these really well or have a similar setup on there flathead I’d love some info and pictures. Awesome work lads and a great score, stoked for you Jordan. I think Matt @IronTrap has a couple of those. Maybe DM on instagram or FB as not sure how often he checks in here.

  4. Good score Jordan, Paradise Wheels in CA would have everything you need and any info on the McCulloch, I got my gear off them for mine that I needed and they’re real helpful.
Has the unit you have have a wire coming out from under the McCulloch badge, if not maybe it’s been modified to a non variable unit, they can apparently handle a bit larger CI motors like that.

  6. Back in Karl’s shop and have got the right side fitting pretty well, I’ve started the left side now (with no buck for reference) makes it challenging. Lots more to come!

Just remember, if it looks good from either side, you're good. After all, Ferraris are notorious for being different from side to side.

    It's looking really good.

Wow! Nice project... Thanks for sharing, I look forward to following the build process. Are you doing hot rivets or faux hot rivets?

Is it still going to fit in your board bag with the extra girth? Looking good, can't wait to see it on the clay

  15. Well not much he’s been done but I’m getting close to finishing off the grill, I’ll pack it in my suit case and fly back soon. Then it’s green light on this to try and finish it off!

  22. Well the supercharger is long gone but gone to a good home and was able to get something I’ve been wanting to build for ever, more on that later. But I managed to score a nice 59ab with a ton of parts but should work fantastic in the car. I also got this cam- that might be a bit too much but wanted to get some opinions.
    I believe it’s a Schneider 425.

  23. Back across the pond, started more work on the race car, got the front end disassembled and the front axle straightened out- and tackled many many holes. I got grill back and made it in one piece from the suit case! It’s time to get this starting to look like a car!

Love the build & axle. Did I miss reason why bottom of grille ( great job on it ) has 2 small pieces metal sticking straight out from side panels?
