OK..Here's another one of my off the wall concepts for Buick in the late 50s. It has both the traditional Buick styling but with a pleasant flow that would be a preview of things to come in automobile design .

Hello,

I was looking at a chopped, Red, custom car and it reminded me of a chopped 1939 Mercury Drag Race Car from back in 1958-59 at Lion’s Dragstrip. It is odd how the mind works, jumping from one image to another. But, as we can all see, that custom car can bring on many ideas and designs.

There weren’t too many drag race cars that used the 1939 Mercury Coupe body for drag racing. It was also the similar story for the Mercury usage as a custom car platform. The body style was similar to the 1940 Ford Coupe and for the drags they were solid runners in the Gas Coupe Class, but compared to the other race cars, they were heavier.

If we had the money to do anything for our second family/business car or hot rod at the time, it may have been a customized Mercury Coupe. A slight chopped top (to keep the proportions right) and modifications, turned into a sedan delivery (for space and security), or turned into a custom station wagon with sedan delivery rear door would be the goal. (for full surround, sight lines and simplicity for the rear door.)

The Mercury Grille looks a little more substantial than the Standard 1940 Ford Coupe Grille. There is no comparison to the 40 Deluxe Grille, but that is another story.

There has to be a standard lowered rake with the custom Lancer 4 prong flipper hubcaps to top off the classy alternative to a normal Mercury Coupe. Powered by an SBC motor for smooth, reliable running everywhere.

But, I kept looking at other chopped Mercury Coupes and something about the window + door made me look at another modified version of a design for the chopped 1939 Mercury Station Wagon.

For those that must have a lowered rake, it gives the old 1939-40 Mercury Coupe turned into a station wagon some attitude and style.

Davkin, I love your work. Other than watercolor, what media do you use?

Personally, I have been trained more in the drafting, technical illustration side of things. It is a bit hard to change gears into a more loose style. I still love a vary accurate approach to things, but with years eyesight dictates ones approach. Color, and subject rules. Thank you ,I look forward to your posts.

 

I actually have the same background. Took my first drafting class in 9th grade when it was just a t-quare, triangles and a regular school desk. Went to tech school later on to learn CAD and spent 29 years as a mechanical detailer/designer. I didn't dive deep into art until about 15 years ago. Maybe I'm kind of weird given my drafting history but I just don't have the patience for making "tight" art, I much prefer impressionism to semi-abstract. What's even more ironic though is my hobbies require a great deal of detail and patience.

I've tried just about all of the mediums. My first painting medium was pastels, but I've done quite a few oils also, tried colored pencil, done lots of graphite and charcoal sketching, but now I mostly make acrylic paintings and line and wash sketches. I've done quite a few fairly tight pen drawings though, like this one:
I like doing them and I like the results but it tends to strain my eyes pretty bad, can only stand to do it for a half hour or so at a time so I struggle a bit with that too. That was getting to be a problem at my job as well, too much time staring at a computer monitor at little black lines and numbers.

 

I just now checked out your website. That is a very impressive body of work! It's great to see such diversity of topics and incredible detail.

...he now has 3" lowering blocks installed in the rear...the piecrusts are on...the wheel-covers and stance are still in work...as is the 2" nose drop...the bumper guards are off too in this inspiration but he will be the ultimate one to decide what gets priority...sharp looking cruiser...
