Hot Rods Does anyone ever use 14" wheels/rims anymore?

  1. Back in the late 60's & 70's it seems most guys used staggered rims front and back, 14's & 15's were pretty common.

    As I was moving stuff around in the garage and rearranging stuff I ran across 6 - 14"steel wheels, I believe they are Chevy Rally wheels.

    Maybe I could take them to the swap meet, someone may want them. HRP

  2. Yes, when I first got my 54 Chevy on the road (20 years ago) I ran 14" MT Raders on pinner whites. I sold them to @ray and I think he still has them on his ride

    I've done that 14" 15" mixmatch rubber rake on a few cars years ago, but I wouldn't do it now. 14" tire selection is way down nowadays and they are getting expensive. If I can find some decent 15" wheels to match what I have on my '65, I would pull the 14" wheels that I have had on it since 1993.
     
  4. Danny, I have 14” white spokes on my O/T drive it into the city to go to work Ranger. It is the stock size and the truck has a slight power disadvantage and the 15’s that were on it when I got it, did not help in that area at all.

    I have 14" Foresight Venture Drag-Mags on the front of my '57 Chevy and 15" chromed steel wheels on the rear. I've got several complete sets of 14" wheels that I would run if I have a car that needs them. I personally have not had any difficulty finding appropriate 14" tires.

    I like 14's, they're the antithesis to the big diameter modern wheels that ruin so many builds. They're also extremely period-appropriate for the late 50's and 60's.

    I ran 14x7 on the front and 15 x 8 on the rear of my 48 for years. It kept the percentage of sidewall on the front tires equal with the percentage on the back balanced.

    When I ordered tires for the Lincoln, I mistakenly bought two 215/70/14" for the front, should have been 15". Didn't waste my money though, got an OT 94 Ranger that takes that size and needs new tires anyway, so I'm just gonna buy a couple of more and act like I did it on purpose!

    I’ve been confronted with the 14” dilemma a couple of times in the last few years. I got a killer deal on two magnesium American 5 spokes but they are 14”. I just happened to have two new tires so I tried to put them on my ‘56 Chevy but they wouldn’t fit with the disc brakes. (I kinda knew that) I’m going to try to use them with Wilson Welding Buick brakes on my ‘33 pickup.
    My Morris woody has 14” steel wheels in front and 15” rears. Looks good size wise. I want to put 5 spokes on it but 14s won’t fit the rear and 15s look odd with such a short front tire. Damn.
    My newly acquired Stude pickup came with four NOS Appliance chrome steel wheels - 14”. I got serious sticker shock when I checked Coker for tires, yikes. So I put on a set of 15s I had up on the rack for now. Later, 14” tires with 1” WW on the chrome wheels with Cal Custom knock-offs.
    Like mr48chev said, sometimes they work well to get the right balance of sidewall/wheel/ wheel opening.

    I’m having a hard time finding a pair of skinny 15” fronts that don’t look like a cheap POS, most look like the ugly Chinese stepsister.

    I got a set 15-8s and 14-6s just use them for setup, used them on my Tub and 40 while under construction. IMG_0757.JPG IMG_5042.JPG

    14’s were very common in the 70’s. I ran the 14-15 combo on my 57 Chevy.

    IMG_20220112_164933.jpg 14 inch front with 15 inch rears on dragmaster rims bought new in 1965. I am not happy with the tire sizes, but for the miles I drive, don't really care. I should probably replace my 20 year old spare though

    I've got 14x6 five spokes on the front of my '34. Have 15x9 five spokes on the rear. 14 and 15 tires are getting hard to find but they are out there. Getting them that are not over a year old is a problem. The front rims are Superiors the backs are ETs. I put these wheels on back in 1990.

    I don't know about bias plys, but I didn't have any problem finding 15" or 14" radials. Cooper and Mastercraft have a bunch of sizes, and there are a shitpot full of overseas brands out there. But then again, I wasn't looking for skinnys, I like a wide tire under my fenders....
    I bought Mastercraft, which is Coopers cheaper tire. I figure they will be like the BFG's they replaced, they'll dry rot before I wear them out.

  22. I have a set of 14" torque thrust D's Ive been trying to sell for 3 years and cant sell them. Tires are hard and pricey to find anymore it seems. Everything on the fleet right now are 15s

    I have a set of 14" aluminum slot mags for the front with 15's for the rear that I switch out on my '40 Tudor now and then. I also have 4 more 14" slots that are also 5 1/2" on 5 bolt pattern. Hard to find around here.
    Currently running 15" stocker type with '40 Std hub caps on the '40.

    those were 14" fenton hawks. still have them and they are still in the rotation. i got wheels like my wife has shoes. i actually stumbled across a set of 15" Raders last summer. saw a guy drive by with a barn find dune buggy on a trailer with the Raders, so i chased him down and bought the wheels right off it! so those will be a new look for my chevy this year...back to the topic, here's a pic of my chevy with staggered chrome steelies and a twofer of my chevy and econo van on 14s, the van i sold a few years ago:

    14s were a lot more popular than we like to remember now. they were right for many cars of the 50's and 60's.

    The kids at wally world go "what size"??? I run 14 x 6 rallys on front of 52 PU to get rake/fender clearence.
