Hot Rods Hurst Mounts and the sincere Imitators

Been seeing many different Hurst mounts in different hot rods and was wondering how many Hurst actually made and how many are copies. So, let’s see what you guys have and if you know what they fit. Here’s what I’ve got, it’s a bit different from most I’ve seen for the early 303-324 Olds as it’s one piece and utilizes the lower bolts for the timing cover.
If anybody has any print ads or catalog info, please post those too. Let’s see what you have!

Never really understood these regarding crushing the timing cover gasket.
I would of though they would continually come loose until the gasket was no longer useful?
They obviously don’t though,or do they?

Imitator, definitely, purchased a u weld it kit from eBay. Modified it for pump clearance on my sbc. It was easy to do! Purchased a wider lower strap. Bent face plate as required and tacked the lower strap in place. Made some support angle gussets and welded it up! Works great for my application. One tip, have the pump you plan on using, their diameter can vary. Plus it helped the steering box clearance!!

 

So according to the catalog it looks like my mount started out as a PO-202 and then was modified with the lower tab to capture the timing cover bolts. I pulled it off my Olds 324 so long ago I don’t remember if all the bolt holes were used, I need to put it back on and I’ll post a picture. I like that my mount has Hurst stamped into it, back when a manufacturer was proud of their products!

Now I’m confused, my mount fits my 324 Olds perfectly! All the bolt holes line up and match the front of the motor.

I’ve a Hurst mount for a BBC into a 35-40 Ford, must be “newer” as the one I saw pictured has holes for small block, 409 and 427. Mine is steel(one I had before was aluminum) but only has holes for the BBC mount.

 

If you were running on these types of engine mounts and wanted to run an automatic that uses a two bolt pad mounted to the crossmember towards the end of the tail shaft would that work? Just curious about flex because of the distance between the engine and transmission mount.

 

Sorry for my comment but I tend to overthink things.
I’m making a very similar mount for a single seater project using an A banger motor but they have actual mounts cast into the timing cover and use only a thin paper gasket.
The Hurst ones obviously work well,look great and a lot of guys use them and have been for a long time.

 

Yes, used the hurst one in my 55 Chevy, and the C1 Corvette basically used this type of mounting from the factory.

Did Henry's water pump gaskets fail?

 

One would be ez to make using a saddle to start. The first thing is the two lower timing cover bolts would need to be removed and the front main cap taped. Those could used for support and a “wing” on each side of the engine down to the saddle for added twist or torque stabilators.

 

A bolt would go right in that last hole, it’s just the angle and light messing with you. Too bad Hurst didn’t stamp model #’s on their mounts.

 

The ones pictured are what I have in my Olds powered Model A. Original, got them off a 48 Merc I drug home that had an Olds motor in it.

 

I would say the engine would like a rear mount, possibly off the bell housing bolts, like a 55 Chevy, to relieve some of the stress on the front and tailshaft mounts.
Just my opinion.

 

The centre lower mount is just the stock front mount off an Olds motor. Looks like it's been welded onto your Pontiac Hurst mount.

 

Unfortunately Hurst don't make a mount that I needed, so I made my own Hurst style. Flathead with 409 water pump. Still in mock up stage.

Thank you. Can't drill to many holes. There are water holes behind the two vertical bolts. I machined them for disc type freeze plugs, but it's thin there so the mount will help seal them. But it's not finished yet and will get some lighting holes somewhere!

 

I've had real Hurst mounts with the "Hurst" stamp, still think I have one somewhere, then I have this imitater

 

Easy to fabricate..I had same issue years back , oil leak in front bolt hole.. Hurst name just screams hot Rod..

 

just bought a tubular engine trans combo , included engine / trans mount and hardware,,,,,,,heavy duty steel ...on E#ay...105.00 shipped....i think transdapt is also made in Chickety Chick...you know where...
