Hey Ya'll. Thought you might dig my 1924 Buick 4 cyl. I have been building this car for the last couple years. Fired it up for the first time at Christmas.

  12. I got my Burtz block last week, starting to order parts, and figuring out who can do what I don’t have sufficient tools or equipment to do. A lot of studying for me to do.

How soon before the New Winfields hit the open market Its been around 50 years since I've owned one (pair) but even back then, they were well used and abused and missing only a "FEW" parts.
The silent majority is patiently waiting.

Got a question... To those who have done a FSI conversion and the guys who have done a B dist conversion... Worth it from the stock A dizzy?

  20. moving over to a cent advance dist is a must, at least as I see it.
I just did one for myself, used a mallory dist from a marine application, machined to fit and did a simple curve change.
personally, I like the points but whatever blows your skirt up

Yes its worth it, I would never go back to stock A, after running a Mallory.
I also am happy with points, I have pertronics in all my other old cars, but on my A with a weak generator, the electronic hall effect thingy did not like low voltage.

    Did some head scratching this morning to figure the estimated flow rates of all the S and SR model Winfield carbs. Assuming that the venturi efficiency is constant across the full range of sizes... here is what I came up with;

    654777A1-A02A-4BB1-8E6A-5966CC002CC7.jpeg

I was planning on flowing the D as this may be my next target, so may be able to verify this number eventually.

I know I’ve seen an article that breaks down the flow rates of all the V8 carbs by model, and as I recall an 81 flows bout 110 cfm, and a 97 bout 150 cfm... can’t find it now, anybody have this article handy for comparison?

This is what I have found:

    Small base Rochester 278cfm
    stromberg 48 175cfm
    stromberg 81 135cfm
    stromberg 97 150cfm
    stromberg LZ 160cfm
    holley 92 142cfm
    holley 94/59 155cfm
    holley 94/8ba 162cfm
    holley egc 185cfm

  26. I have to ask at what level of vacuum are these numbers taken?
I do know that when Holley started making the 4BBL carbys, the vacuum level was changed to accommodate the old flow benches to determine the flow.

As I understand the story... the old standard of measuring carbs was cfm at 3” of vacuum. Apparently flow benches are only capable of drawing about 900 cfm at 3”, so when larger 4 barrel carbs came out 1.5” of vacuum was used to essentially double the capacity of the flow bench

  28. I think you are right here
I was testing head and port flow some years ago and found a 600cfm 4bbl flowed nearly double the 500cfm 2bbl.
Both were Holley carbs, it is still deceiving.

After moving to injection systems, carbys seem antiquated. Don't get me wrong, I still run them.

Keep us informed on your progress, it looks great!!

I had a good chat with the fella doin the flow bench work the other day. I am not pretending to fully understand all of what he was saying, but was intrigued by this particular detail. It seems really odd to me that the industry standard would be to have 2 different measurement scales that don’t seem to correlate to one another...?!

A 4 barrel carb is essentially 2 separate 2 barrel carbs joined at the hip... one would think that if the carb outsized the flow bench, it would simply be measured in halves and the volumes added...
