On the old board this would never have been allowed to run for so long...
I guess you just got to be careful what you wish for these days.

 

The guys on the old board got old and put automatics and small cams in their cars

 

My Car is a Street-Rod thats what I Have been told because I have
a Chevy in it with a Powerglide in it But I Don't Care what other
People Think its my Car & I have Drum Brakes All Around No PS
or AC. I just Drive it When The Weather is OK not like Today -2 deg.
I Dont Drive until the Snow is All Gone.!
Some people Drive the Car All Year long in The NE if you Want
Wipe out your Car then drive in the Winter When They Put So
Much SALT on the Road it will RUST a Railroad Tie to Dust.!

The old board is gone.

When I joined Ryan was a college kid and there were maybe 100 guys total.
We talked about everything, not just on topic stuff. We gave people crap, shot the bull and helped each other. We watched guys learn and build their first projects.

Those folks are now 20+ years older, raised families and now have kids the same age as many of us were when we first found the hamb.
It wasn’t some glorious traditional only, Mecca that I hear folks talk about. I think people have a fantasy of a no problems board.

It had its issues. Guys were posting pics of their tattooed peckers, Mud And Steve were posting 4 wheel drive Camaros, Germ was posting cocaine induced rants. It was more fun though.

If things are run so rigid, we are no different than the restoration guys that condemn us for changing the motor in our pristine original barn find.

The things I miss about the old board is the feeling of camaraderie that we don’t have anymore. I just like cars and guys that build them, not drama filled hero worship.

There has to be some sort of rules or it would run off the rails, but come on, we are all adults here, mostly….

It's already like the restoration boards... A young guy on here who is building a Model A got called out for using (OMG!) self locking nuts on his spring shackles instead of castellated nuts and cotter pins! So he should junk what he's got and go 'traditional' on four nuts??? Give me a break!!!

Locknuts (nylocks) were invented pre ww2 (I think maybe the 30s actually). Im a nerd. I looked it up when putting a roadster together. Its a period correct 40s build and i care about every detail including every nut and bolt. Nylocks are totally period correct

Well, threads that make me laugh out loud are rare on the current HAMB I miss them.

 

Mine was brown. It was nicknamed "The Radical Rat". This was 1978.

 

I looked for a long time until I found a late model truck with roll up windows. I think its built as a cheapo commercial pickup.

 

This was in 90. Old guy pulled the small block and put it in a t bucket.

Not at all. A Streetrodder is concerned with billet, tweed, pastels, 20" rims and rubberband tires. He worships at the 'form over function' alter. Streerodders prefer gas mileage over performance.

A Streetrodder would custom flame a Prowler. A traditional Hotrodder would drop a blown Hemi with zoomies in it.

 

Nope. Any hot rodder with a slant towards nostalgia wouldn't waste their time and money on it........

 

Yep all good, we have some kind of RULES, but they lack tolerance at times and definitely lack consistency.

 

A traditional hotrodder would run a prowler off a cliff.

I'm here because I like traditionally styled cars. Like some others, I don't want to define it but I know it when I see it.

This hobby is like baking a pie. Give the same basic ingredients to two cooks with personal recipe options, one can turn out a delicious pie, the other maybe an inedible mess. Apply rules limiting options, and now the messes won't be as common but most pies will tend to be all the same. But the delicious pies will also be less common...

It's never been about celebrating the 'common', it's the extraordinary cars/builders that make the lasting marks.

I've been on the HAMB for almost half of my life. That seems weird to say. There was a lot of stuff that passed years ago that never would now. It is what it is. I can speak for myself that I was just a kid trying to figure this shit out. The internet was nowhere near as expansive as it is now, and we were all trying to get the information we needed to put these things together.

I've always been of the mindset that the "traditional rod and custom" genre, which in my eyes also encompasses the traditionally-inspired/traditional-appearing, is too small of a subset of the automotive hobby to further bifurcate. Rods and Customs may be different, a strictly traditional car may be different than a traditionally inspired car, but they are a whole lot more alike than when comparing them to a Chevelle, Mustang, BMW, or Honda. We have more in common that we don't.

I'd also add that invariably, whenever I do a Google search for some in-depth technical info, I get funneled to a thread here from like 2005.

 

Yup, I have my favorite Points Screwdriver. It's the Goldilocks tool, just right for the task.

One more on my "traditional" list.

 

When the 'net traffic went through the roof. When the membership numbers skyrocketed. That is when it changed. It went from R to PG to G rated. Look at the gate keepers here and other threads where 'drama' is sensed. Or imagined.
