i got this chevy 350 motor and i dont know much about it, it runs good, but i would like to know where it came from. below are pictures of the casting marks on the heads. im confused. thanks in advance
Last three digits of the casting number under the valve cover are probably 186 or 492. Post the letters and numbers from the pad next to the water pump leg and someone here will decode it for you. There s also a date code under the cover.
My 186 heads look identical. Under the valve covers there is a casting number....give us that for a [positive I.D.
i need to go double check, i think it might be TJY I will have to try and get to that, very difficult to see, any tricks to get to see that?
Ya in the car is sometimes difficult. A small mirror and a flash light? TJY is a 350. After another look those are two different heads.
i went out and checked and this is what i found: stamp is V1221TJY the passenger head says 3927186: and the drivers side head says 3947041 the casting number is 3970010, i used some silly putty to find it, and flipped the picture around. what sort of a Frankenstein motor do i have? like i said, it seems to run nicely. its got a cam in it.
The block is from a 1974 Chevy truck, according to the partial VIN C4F.... C means Chevy Truck, 4 means 1974, F is the assembly plant. The date codes on the heads show they're from other things. The 010 at the end of the block casting is what I'd expect for the block stampings. 350 block, most likely 4 bolt main, as used in lots of Chevy trucks and a few higher performance cars from 1969-1979.
Both heads are from model years 69-70 302/350 and functionally the same. That silly putty trick is clever!
you need to look at the crankshaft, or measure the stroke, to figure out what displacement it is. It' 97% likely that it's a 350. But you never know for sure...
I'd bet dollars to dimes it's a 350 and probably been bored and rebuilt at some time. I have similar Crower Monarch in one of my 327's and it was great but now sits under the bench waiting..
