The prickly Pears on the cactus to the right make good wine. I have 13 gallons of it in the basement ready for bottles.

there’s something kinda magical about that first little while of driving the car after being away for a while.

wether time or distance was the issue, it starts a little harder. Steering’s a little funky.

but the more your in the car moving down the road, rowing threw the gears the grudges the car is holding onto start to work away.

the shifts come into place perfect, you find your heal placement on the worn floor. It all starts jiving together.

it’s not unlike a scene played out in a dozen movies but it still feels good every time.

 

I do hope your going to ditch the nylock nuts for some proper castle nuts on that spring shackle set.

 

I think carillo makes them.

or you can just drill the stuff you have for a pin? That’s probably what I’ll end up doing

I just drill mine for a castle nut and cotter pin. But I do have these... they are old reproductions or NOS . They are 1-3/4" wide and use the steel bushings.

 

@dumprat do you drill straight into them or use some sort of jig?

I was thinking I’d mark and chuck up a proper sized nut in my drill press and drill that. Then spin it onto the stud that needs drilled and run it threw. That way it should land the hole in the center of the stud and help brace the drill bit from drifting/ deflecting on the round face of the stud

Tim . I just center punch where I want the hole and eyeball the rest, but I have 25+years of drilling shit this way. The best way to get them straight is to use a V block clamped down and centered correctly.

 

Drilling holes in the right place and straight is one of the great challenges for us one eyed guys, even with a drill press.

 

Those are Model A, I think Joey needs 32-34's..... His spring looks like a 32.

 

You can use a cotter pin drill jig, that are cheap and you can use one eye for a perfect hole. Ha, Ha.....

 

Depending on bushings they fit the same.

 

They used to make steel bushings 40 years ago so you could use an A shackle in a 32. I still have a set in the barn
that fit loose in the spring perch hole, that will ware your perch out in time. Where would you get a set today? You
may as well change your perches and main leaf to Model A if your bent on using A shackles. It's mush easier to
upgrade to 32-24 stuff and they look period correct and you don't have to grease them. Just sayin....
