To honor the loss of a friend to the hot rod world, I was going to draw his '55 Chevy but will re-post some others for the week.

  15. I was listening to an old playlist of music over the holidays and ran across this Dwight Yoakam tune that inspired me to sketch and this developed from it. I'm more of a rock and roll type but grew up around Country music and have always loved rockabilly. When Dwight came onto the scene in the mid 80's with his rockabilly honky-tonk style sound I was instantly hooked. For those of you that maybe have never heard his music, and/or if your so inclined , you can check out the song that inspired this piece here.

1963 1st Generation build Jim Lytle “Big Al”

    Hello,

What looks like a typical old hot rod from the 1950s to the early 1960s? If anyone saw this 1934 Ford sedan sitting in the pits by itself, the expectation would be a cool hot rod for the street. One of the most unusual race cars was Jim Lytle’s 1934 Ford two door sedan. It had the suicide doors , steel wheels, whitewalls and a chopped top. So, a modified sedan to say the least and after seeing what is inside, one would think the name calls itself well.

The big Allison Aircraft Engine (P-51 V12 engine) was set in place of the driver. Where was the driver? He was sitting slightly in front the rear end like all good Altered Class Drivers are supposed to be located.

If it were on a lowered rake and one did not know it was a 148 mph race car, it may have been mistaken for a nice light blue 1934 two door hot rod in the pits. The big slicks not withstanding, the rims, painted, the whitewall tires obvious, and the look of the sedan was all business. for most drag racing fans, this original version was what made the build so impressive.

The later models just went a little too far and no longer looked like a traditional hot rod that could run 10 seconds in the quarter mile. The later versions were just a fiberglass body on a frame going down the dragstrip… the original was gone and so was history.

    Traditional hot rod? In disguise?

Whether it was sitting level or had the front lowered slightly, the rake would be an indication of some aggression.

Big Al I (the steel bodied version) ran 10.50 @ 148 at Lions in August 1963

Things are looking great already gang. I love Jigger's stuff, as always! And the image of that Allison-powered 34 sedan makes me wish I could have heard and seen it run. Thanx for all the cool stuff kids.
