Technical Overdrive ID

Trying to find info on this OD set up.
Google didn’t work. It’s smaller looking than the bigger truck units I’ve seen. (Appears that way)
Was removed from a late 40s Willys product

 

when you turn shafts and count turns and shift it, what does it do?

and what size U joint yokes does it have?

 

and does it have a PTO cover or two on the sides we can't see?

 

I only have pics.
the Willys product would have has a Dana 41 or 44

I’ve looked up spicer ODs and haven’t found one that looks like this.
And nothing comes up under Dana

Probably is the Dana/Spicer auxiliary.
Rated for 1/2 ton trucks.
Can be turned around for underdrive

I've never seen one. Looks cool. I doubt Chelsea - Dana still services it though. I've dealt with Watson boxes and Brown -Lipe (essentially Spicer). I currently have a Spice 5831 three speed waiting for parts. However, that unit is for ton and a half - 2 ton trucks.

I’m just going off the info given.
It resembles some of the smaller auxiliary transmissions from the 40s and 50s. Those were smaller than the monsters I’ve been around

 

I familiar with spicer and brownie boxes.
This one looks smaller.
If it is a Dana/spicer4800 then it’s around 50 pounds. A lot lighter than the spicer bigger auxiliaries

 

Some of the Watson boxes are as small as the one posted. The one posted looks like some of the drive through PTO's I've worked on. Hi-Lo- Neutral. Neutral for using the pto while the vehicle is stationary. I'm going to get in touch with our Chelsea people today to see if tis unit is still available or servicable.

 

I think I saw a racing hydr boat running one to overdrive the prop , a long time ago .
Kinda cool and would go nice behind my 8ba open drive truck ?

A friend put a two speed auxiliary gearbox in a late 30's GMC truck. He turned it around for use as an OD...He had inspected all the internal parts ...The box howled so loud it was scary..Don't know if it was a Brown-Lip, Spicer or whatever..

 

I had a Watson under, neutral, direct, and over unit in a '40 1 1/2 ton Ford. Big heavy sucker with with a power take off option. Who knows if it was noisy. The whole dang truck was noisy. But the over gearing actually made the truck somewhat driveable. Can't image using 1st under unless you needed to get out and push at the same time..

 

I have a Doug Nash OD mounted to a th400.
Nice simple set up. Makes a cool noise.

 

Back when I ran a pulpwood yard, there was a guy who had F350 with a C6 automatic. It wasn't geared low enough for him, so he took a 3 speed manual trans out of something and attached it to the C6 as an auxiliary. Low on the 3 speed gave him a grandma gear, and high was direct so his highway speed was the same.
