Was that a Plymouth fenderless coupe at the 1:19 mark? I dig the hotrod at the 4:33 mark.

Haven't seen these before. The colorization, while perhaps not historically accurate, is outstanding!

The 36 Tudor 2:24 had some extra trim on the hood, and skirts with 41 Buick moldings . Great video, showcasing all of the available brands on the road.

Wow ! And to think all of those prime vehicles cease to exist, not to mention the folks going about their daily lives, or perhaps even the landscape may well look different, yet just 3 years or so after the war the threat of such a record in time could well not have been.

  14. Try watching it at half speed. It's easier to see stuff. I saw a cool 34 Roadster but it was really dark, hard to tell any details.

  16. I did notice that drivers were just as inconsiderate in 1948 as they are today....The poor guy in the Model A pick-up couldn't catch a break trying to merge into traffic from his curbside parking spot.!

^^^Seriously!!! I noticed that too. Even when the passing cars were stopped nobody let him off the curb into traffic.

Like the peep mirror...those rectangular mirrors were earlier than I thought...These films are great for period reference because it's the footage not opinions...

The guy in the panel at 2:04 was either giving somebody the finger or using the appropriate signal for turning. I believe it was the latter.

  22. But there's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much less traffic. Seriously...... .35 cents to park ALL day in LA!!!!!.

I love/hate these videos, my mind is on overload. Between the buildings, the cars, the people.....just EVERYTHING...everything about this I love. The part I hate is I wasn't there, my mom wasn't even born yet.

I wonder about the premise of the film? Was someone trying to make a name for themselves, or preserving something for future generations to look back on?

It would be pretty cool if the film could be back sourced, find out it it was just mom and dad taking a drive and sending it to a relative in Wisconsin to show them what it’s like in LA or?
It’s pretty cool these old films come out from nowhere:)

The Colorization is a compilation of footage from several films of similar nature...here is a quoted description below of the Stock Footage with Getty Images behind the Ownership...

"Internet Archive's 35mm stock footage collection consists of material especially shot for stock footage purposes as well as feature film outtakes and unused material that were conserved for future use in other productions. Rights to this collection are held by Internet Archive. You may download and reuse material under the Creative Commons Attribution License. If you require higher-quality material or a written license agreement, please contact Getty Images for licensing information."

I suspect this was just random footage taken for use in advertising, documentaries or even movies...Contained in the Archive is film footage we have seen shared here ie that Hotrod film of the vintage roaring roadsters...

    https://archive.org/details/35mmstockfootage?&sort=-week&page=9

...The link above has more vintage footage than you can watch in a lifetime across the board in subject matter...

  27. It was probably far more common in L. A. for someone in 1948 to have a movie camera capable of videos like this, but you surely wouldn't have found one in the abject poverty of the Southern Appalachians where I came from.

Funny in a way it's a lot like Google Street...time captured that lived on while so much has already departed...pictures are like that...truly incredible to witness...

That truly is an incredible film short and its been shared here countless times in other Threads...me being one of those sharers...The Roaring Roadsters...When the Roundy Rounds looked best on the Track but also when they were most dangerous due to lack of Rollbars and such...just a leather strap bolted or tied to the floor to grab and keep yourself in if all hell broke loose...
