History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

Sounds like them although the T Bolt hasn't been driven since the early 80's. The restoration is getting close to being done but business and life keep getting in the way.

 

Here are the cars. I was with them drove in but mine is a hard top.

 

@tommyd ill be anxious to see what the T-Bolt looks like after the restoration is complete. I’ve always liked ‘64 Fastbacks, but I’d really rather have a hardtop post car.

Seems I remember a white ‘64 that may have been tubbed with steel wheels up your way also.

During our time at Lion’s Dragstrip, we saw plenty of fast Gas Coupes and Sedans racing every weekend. Some were outstanding and we knew what we were going up against if we completed our 1940 Willys Coupe with the 292 SBC with a 671 supercharger making some power.

At first, B/Gas was our goal. It was our development stages with the new motor and coupe. Then after a few months of running B/Gas with a carburetor powered SBC, we rebuilt it to 292 with all blower spec parts and a new 671 supercharger. Now, that would have kept us in the B/Gas class, but with some extra weight welded in place for frame and body rigidity, we dropped into the C/Gas arena where we knew there were still some top competitors from all over So Cal.

The other teams also had similar ideas of moving from one class to the next, but once the cars were dialed in, most stayed in the same class. The Bayer/Frietas 1937 Chevy Coupe was one of those great competitors and ran against some powerful teams in the B/Gas class. They set records.

Eventually, they wound up with their version of the twin engine SBC FED for their further drag racing history.

I’ve been listening to the American Hot Rod Foundation’s podcast interview with Bob Muravez this afternoon, it’s really interesting, I’ll have to finish it in the morning.

The 554 coupe is one of my all time favorites, it would have been interesting to see this thing run full blast quarters on Nitro!

 

Yes, it was "interesting". Down right thrilling is what it was!!

Seeing it and hearing it, is a sensation I will never forget. I saw it in June of 63 at Puyallup Wa. with Jungle driving, and many times in the 80's with Gerry Steiner at the wheel, what a car !!!

Would you settle for a short film clip from 1960 at the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet #2? Just imagine the loudest set of exhaust pipes humming to the fine tune. Then picture the sound plus acceleration right in front of you. Now, you get the picture.

Great artwork from 1963

I was crowded against the chain link fence at Bakersfield, trying to get the best films I could take. All while fighting off this blond lady who kept pushing over and getting her bubble hair in the frames. There was no need to lean over as we all had a clear vision of the race cars racing. But, bubble head kept thinking, if she leans, she could see better. At least the films came out somewhat clear and jiggle free.

The day was long, the racing was outstanding and memories of that day are still in my mind when I get to glance at the color films on my computer file and on the You Tube channel
J NAKI. They are some of the only color racing films taken and preserved from that early March Meet in 1960. I had to fight for every inch of space to get those films as best that I could. Now, they are HD quality digital copies while my originals sit in temperature controlled closet, still in the 16mm metal reels.
